Paul Cohen:
One important thing is trying to find a housing technology that provides a
lot of quality with low-cost input. Our approach to housing has been to find
the minimum quality standards that would be an entry level for low-income households
to move into. And we haven't really compromised those quality standards.
So we have had damp-proof coursing on the floors, insulation, ceiling board
on the roofs, passive solar design, high quality surface finishes . . .
Those have been quality standards that are right through our housing system
from a 7,000 rand single-room unit, right through to something of
60,000 or 70,000 rand.
