The Tlholego Development Project is a "seed" community for developing sustainable rural economies
based on long-term cultivation of the soil, water, plant, animals and human
resources in the surrounding watershed or "bioregion." The Tlholego model
moves towards a systemic solution to a series of crucial issues facing the
sustainability of our global community at this time. This model brings
humans and earth into a mutually enhancing relationship and focuses on the
transformation of poverty (land and people) into environmental, human and
social capital. The model provides short-term solutions to meeting day to
day needs and is grounded in a 10 to 20 year strategy for long-term
sustainability.
Perhaps one of the most valuable aspects of the Tlholego project is that it
provides an opportunity for people from diverse cultural and economic
backgrounds to meet in a safe and nurturing environment, to explore
differences and common ground and celebrate possibilities for a life worth
living. This ongoing process of intergenerational learning provides a
holistic context to grow social and human capital, creating a healthy
foundation for realizing the unique opportunities that our "world in crisis"
presents us with today.
