Hear Rosa María:

"The monkeys come right up to my house every day. The smaller monkeys come every day. Spider monkeys are coming back."

The good news is that the incredibly rich and diverse ecosystems of Madidi are resilient. Animal populations have rebounded dramatically in areas that receive active protection.

Hear Rosa María:

"When I went to live there, people thought I was absolutely, stark, raving mad . . . and now everybody wishes they were at the house."

Macaws (above) soar alongside cliffs (below) where Rosa María makes her home, and ecotourists are welcome.
Hear Rosa María:

" . . . the macaws . . . will and come and sit on a branch, like, two or three meters away, and kind of look at you. We play games
. . . and I lie on my hammock and the monkeys come and peer at me."

[TRANSCRIPT - 4.3]

The bird pictured below is just one of the amazing variety of animal species in the park. Madidi has more than 11 percent of the earth's bird species, including a very large number of  North American migratory birds.

Hear Rosa María:

" . . . the macaws . . . have burrowed out their nests . . . inside the cliff. It's just amazing. Beautiful, beautiful construction! They remind me of monasteries."

[TRANSCRIPT - 4.4]

Rosa María (below) gets a close-up view of an unusual nesting site for macaws.
