  Mediating a Dispute Over Polygamy
Begum and shalish
Hasina Begum (above left, in shalish) is from Neej Wajidpur and has one child from her marriage (right). She called for salish when her husband Rana Hawladar married another woman without her consent. (Her father-in-law, in blue shirt above, gestures as he makes a point.) After four hours of constant negotiation between the two parties, the salish decided that because Hawladar has already married another woman, no matter what happens, one woman will be hurt. Because Begum is unwanted by her husband, and she doesn't want to go back to him, Hawladar must pay alimony ("haq mahar") plus all the money he forced her to bring from her father during their their married life. He also must pay about US$3.60 (Taka 200) per month for child support.

Begum signs agreement
Begum uses her thumbprint to sign the agreement because she is illiterate. The woman in a green sari holding a seal and the man holding a pen are MLAA staff members.
