Laxman Singh the problems of his region when he began his work (through a translator):
In 1975, when I first began my work, the land used to look very barren. There were very few trees. There was just one pond in the village that was Ann Sagar, and even that was totally broken, in the sense that there were no proper embankments.
There was very little greenery around. There was a lot of migration that was taking place. People were going out of the village to other places to towns and they would also bring back a number of diseases with them.
This was a big problem, because entire families were migrating. They would leave behind their cattle. There would be no area where the cattle could graze. Those who were left behind, if they wanted to take their cattle for grazing, they would have to really travel to distant places.
