Laxman Singh talks about his philosophy of comprehensive development and self-reliance (through a translator):
Our philosophy is that whatever work has to be done, it has to involve the people. The people must contribute to that work. The people should feel that we are self-made, in the sense that we
have developed our village through our own efforts.
We concentrated on many aspects of the work like animal husbandry, building up the ecosystem, water conservation, agriculture. And because of all this work that we
and the people of the village, especially, have been doing, the village is a very strong
village which not only the government acknowledges, but other villages also acknowledge this fact that Laporya is a strong village.
When we work in the village, then we are trying to develop the land of the entire
village. We are utilizing the entire land of the village, and maybe on one piece of the land we are concentrating on irrigation. On another piece of land we might develop it as a pastureland. On another piece of land, we might do something which will improve the ecology. The government, it will just take one piece or one area of the land and try to concentrate on it.
