Sierra Gorda: Biological Jewel
|
Coniferous
and Tropical
Evergreen
Forests
The Sierra Gorda's coniferous forests are home to 14 different types of pine trees, and the last remaining (and northernmost) remnant of tropical evergreen forest in central Mexico.
Unfortunately, these lands have been threatened by logging, deforestation for marginal agricultural activities and cattle ranching. As a result, soil is depleted when erosion occurs on steep slopes, and there is a loss of plant species and wildlife habitat.
