Forest
This low jungle is the most extensive vegetation in the Sierra Gorda.
Plant life includes cactus species unique to this area, such as the cactus pictured at left, whose name in Spanish means "little old man," a reference to its white fuzzy appearance.
Mammal species include white tail deer and wildcats including the puma, mountain cat, javelina, margay, and jaguarundi.
Rare riverine "gallery" forests are lush with vegetation. Sabino trees (right) and large, old sycamores create a shady refuge alongside small pools and cascades that invite wading.
