Innovation - idea: Lilia Cisneros founded Instituto para la atencion Integral del Nino Quemado more than 30 years ago. At that time burned kids were ignored and nobody took care of them.
Innovation - why it is pioneering: Nobody in Mexico considered burned kids as a health problem before IAINQ existed. Nowadays, there are new initiatives in the same field thanks to the path opened by IAINQ.
Strategy - how it achieves impact: We partner with hospitals devoted to the issue. Our experience through the years has improved our (treatment) model.
Strategy - growth plans: Now we are focused more on prevention and education.
Impact to date: Nowadays, there are other organizations that work with what we designed.
Future impact: We demonstrated that is possible to lower the treatment costs and create volunteer networks.
Sustainability - resource base: May be this is our main weakness. The health sector has been focused in repeated “fashion waves”. AIDS, cancer, respiratory illnesses have been more attractive.
Major challenge for the field: We want to consolidate our teaching operation to get Latin American countries to give scholarships to medical students to be trained in IAINQ.
