Innovation - idea: NELBEM KENYA aim to use the little resources within the reach of local people and enhance capacity building which can help them imptove their standard of Living, the system help the different sun-tribes in kenya live together and share the resources withou andy discrimiation against the others. Fighting for the little resource canbe sorted out by coming together and build a common to benefit all.
Innovation - why it is pioneering: It is pioneering since it has never been there before and since it inception, variuos social benefit have been seen among the local people.
The local have open up their mind and discover that they have resources which can be exploited and benfit them now and in future, it has build others to become better leaders and be resourceful for the society and their families.
Strategy - how it achieves impact: Nessuit is an important source of water for Lake Nakuru, the natural habitat of the flamingos in Kenya. It is situated in Nakuru district, Rift valley Province. The biggest problem facing the local communities are poverty, deforestation and the lost of water for the Lake Nakuru. The project aims at eradicating poverty and protecting the water source for Lake Nakuru through reforestation, water catchments, water harvesting, and production of organic honey. The project will help to build a tree nursery, reforest the river basin, and build capacity on honey production and commercialisation of honey. Potentially the honey trade. The project will help the endangered flamingos of lake nakuru and contribute to eradicate poverty in the local communities by creating employment and developing a sustainable management of the local resources. 15 direct jobs will be created, and over 100 indirect
Strategy - growth plans: • Create a community committee for the project implementation and development of the work plan and marketing strategy, involving key community groups (rural farmers, women and youth, local authorities, project co- ordinator and experts). • Construction of a tree nursery (3 full time workers and 5 temporary and half time). • Reforestation of the river basin and protection of the water catchments (volunteers from the community) • Promotion of local water harvesting for domestic use and for livestock to reduce water wastage along the river. • Creation of a small local co-operative to produce and commercialise honey and to monitor the project performance. • Training on honey production, using the indigenous knowledge and new technology of bee keeping provided by experts in various fields. • Training to carpenters to build modern beehives and installation in the community. • Contact the local markets, supermarkets and retailers to promote community honey. • Project evaluation, repo
Impact to date: The impact of our project was fully explain by a kenya local daily newspaper and can be seen online, See below the story: New project keeps youth abuzz Weldon Korir knows all too well the potential his people have to develop themselves. Despite the scarcity of land needed by each family, there is usually an abundance of subsistence crops, some of which are even sold.
There are other avenues, besides land, to a comfortably living. But he is worried that sometimes the community is blinded by short-term measures to see the opportunities around it.
Ingrained suspicion over land ownership between brothers can lead to full-scale fights that threaten to uproot both communities - the Ogiek and the Kipsigis - from the area.
When he started a small non-governmental organisation specialising in bee-keeping and livestock rearing, his aim was to bring the two communities even closer together.
That was in 2003. The project is known as NELBEM KENYA,
Future impact: • A tree nursery in operation. • Reforestation of river basin (20 Km, and around 20, 000 trees) • Increase the production and commercialisation of honey by 60% • 70 new beehives. • 15 jobs generated and 100 bee keepers trained.
Sustainability - resource base: The Human resopurce side is well cover since now all members contribute by working themself in the project farm howver the difficult is on the fiancail side wher the few resource coming from the project are not profitable howevr we are project them to be self sustainable in future. current we have strategic partners who have contribute fiancial support towards capcity building through training on specific areas where there are urgent needs and place where the future will need bases for it stabilty such as leadership, record keeping etc
Major challenge for the field: The major challenges are Fiancial as the first, and Politicians as the second and third is High level of illitracy among the members in the rural areas
