Simply cast a whole house in a day, employing unskilled labour, reducing

Entrants's Name: Hennie BOTES

Country: South Africa

Field: Housing

Innovation - idea: In order to be a contender when it comes to delivering 50 or 1,000,000 houses,it should be viewed as a “Production Line”,similar to that of the automotive industry.By applying a disciplined approach, logistics, management and a reliable technology such as moladi,a project can be completed on time,in budget without forfeiting quality. We are geared to help and coach TEAMmoladi partners and customerswww.moladi.com

Innovation - why it is pioneering: We simply cast a whole house in a day, employing unskilled labour, reducing time, waste and cost. Eliminating chasing for plumbing and electrical pipe work, plastering and beam filling results in a very strong thermal wall. Moladi addresses six key challenges embodied in the housing shortage facing developing countries: lack of resources, shortage of skills, time constraint, controlled work flow, waste and insufficient fundswww.moladi.com/low_cost_construction.htm

Strategy - how it achieves impact: One of the important principles under a lean production paradigm is termed ‘lean assembly’. This refers to simplifying the process of assembly through industrialisation, modularisations, standardisation, and continuous flow processes.

The reduction of operations required for a production process means less chance of the occurrence of errors, waste and rework. This follows from the same logic that the fewer the number of operations, the higher the quality of the product and a predictive timeline, resulting in cost savings.

Moladi provide and assist with the full range of requirements involved in the transfer and use of their proven technology.

moladi is produced in Port Elizabeth (South Africa) and exported.

Strategy - growth plans: We are currently in negotiation to set up production plants in Panama, Mexico and Dubia to reduce cost, import duties in order to reduce the cost of construction even further.Traditionally bricks or blocks are manufactured in a small mould and then laboriously laid by an artisan, sandwiched with mortar. The walls are then chased to position the water and electrical pipes and later plastered by an artisan to fill and rectify the damaged wall to conceal the imperfections.

“As a rule, small contractors build houses in a traditionally ineffective way, with low quality materials, inferior workmanship, little or no professional support and no benefit of economy of scale. In order to be a contender when it comes to delivering 1 or 10 000 units, it should be viewed as a “Production Line”, similar to that of the automotive industry. By applying a disciplined lean approach, logistics, management and a reliable technology such as Moladi, a project can be completed on time and in budget without

Impact to date: moladi Construction Systems (MCS), winner of the South African Bureau of Standards Design for Development Award, is a unique patented plastic injection moulded formwork system that is revolutionising the construction industry. moladi focuses on creating job opportunities within the labour environment and facilitates the speedy delivery of hurricane and earthquake resistant houses, clinics and schools etc. by reducing construction cost without compromising a high standard of quality. Moladi is currently used in South Africa, Panama, Mexico, Angola, Botswana and Kenya and negotiations are being finalised with Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Sudan, Algeria, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Ecuador. www.moladi.com/social_upliftment.htm

Future impact: "Beyond the brick" To facilitate the transfer of technology that will encourage participation and empower communities on a global basis. Due to the neglect of the poor and very poor over many decades, the real source of market promise is not the wealthy few in the developing world, or even the emerging middle-income consumers: It is the billions of aspiring poor who are joining the market economy for the first time.

Countries that lack the infrastructure to meet basic humanitarian needs provide the ideal situation for the development of environmentally sustainable technologies and products. Housing is a primary sector of industry that can contribute towards the upliftment and empowerment of communities. The building industry’s emphasis has traditionally been on commercially viable projects sidelining low-cost housing and the implicated low profit margins. As a rule, small contractors build low-cost affordable houses in a traditionally ineffective way, with low quality materials,

Sustainability - resource base: For companies with the resources and persistence to compete at the bottom of the economic pyramid, the prospective rewards include the incalculable contribution to social and economic development, growth and substantial profits. This would ultimately result in the multiplication of secondary economic activities and the development of small and medium scale enterprises, which would result in an increase in job opportunities.

Major challenge for the field: By focusing on aspects of the construction industry, it is possible to generate wealth and opportunities for emerging communities by introducing and facilitating mutually beneficial projects between these communities and the established formal sector. Mobilise joint ventures and partnerships involving business, community based and non- governmental organisations, facilitating the establishment of Co-operatives are but some of the options that can bring forth “Sustainable Development”.

The opportunity for creating "sweat equity" is also a great incentive for building one's own home. To more and more people this is very important, because their sweat equity is the only equity they can muster. Communities who are building their own homes do it in a state of excitement and eagerness.

Changemakers Housing Competition Posted July 19 '06, 14:00:55
Mr. Botes,

Are you aware of the current Changemakers competition that is focused on finding solutions for affordable housing? I suggest that you consider entering it, as you are clearly qualified to participate. Your ideas will be most helpful for many others and will gain exposure to potential sources of funding and support.

Also, I wonder about your use of plastic. With rising costs of petrochemicals, will plastic soon be price prohibitive for your purposes? Are you using recycled plastics?

Thanks for your visionary work.

Best, Madeline Johnson

School Project - Estimate Posted May 6 '07, 17:13:42
Hello: I am 10 years old, my name is Rebecca Wells, and I am a student in Texas. As a project for school, I am trying to estimate the costs of building a small elementary school in Kenya. My mother has explained that your site says that you cannot estimate costs without detailed plans, but since your business has been involved in building schools in similar areas using your materials in the past, I was hoping that you would be willing to give me a very simple estimate of what it would cost per square foot or meter to build a simple 10 classroom school with a couple of offices, a small gym, cafeteria and library. Would it be possible to send me a simple email that gives a minimum construction cost using your materials? I was hoping to show in my project report that using materials like Moladi could make this an affordable project and address some important needs. Thanks for any help -- your email would be all I need to show my teacher that my estimate of cost is at least somewhat reasonable! Thanks! Rebecca Wells, Age 10, Austin, Texas
