Entrants's Name: Nuwamanya Tugume Francis

Country: Uganda

Field: Entrepreneur and business person

Innovation - idea: To tackle problems related to poverty and environmental decline through proving free Pinus seedling for massive Forestation thus long term variety of trees.

Innovation - why it is pioneering: Numerous instititutions have come up with brilliant programs to handle the problem but least achievements can be traced. This has been mainly due to alter of the original focus; initiators always differ from implementers unlike us. Then application of short term solutions to the crisis. We are determined to make tangible achievements.

Strategy - how it achieves impact: We give 20 Pinus seedling to a poor family free, in 15 years a Pinus tree engender US$ 220. Then 20 mature Pinus trees will earn US$ 4400. Sales are 100% for the family. There other tortuous beneficiaries, no donor that will ever give a single family such amount free or its equivalent property. It is our plane to see at least 500 trees planted with our efforts.

Timber will always have market, even in everyday lives, we all are surrounded by timber structures and wooden commodities. Our homes and workplaces are partially or even wholly constructed from or with assistance of wood product; there is a need to motivate the public into considering forestation investment

Strategy - growth plans: The Foundation’s activities commenced way back in 2002 and achievement have been recorded. The following is the agenda for phase one ending 31st January, 2007. 1. Bringing up 500,000 seedlings to complete the target of 2,000,000 new trees to be planted in the country by the efforts of the Foundation. 2. The Foundation is spear heading campaign for the private forestation and this activity shall continue throughout. 3. Purchase of the a 5ha piece of land will be effected with in phase one 4. Up to 5,000 families will have received free seedling, 5. The commencement of phase two will be at the beginning of 2007 and shall be concluded in2017. We are looking for seeing every body in this country plant a tree.

Impact to date: Yes, we are enlightening and convincing the public about the need to invest in forestation.

We have persuaded prominent investors into venturing in forestation and a number of hectors has been established from the efforts. 200ha Pinus Plantation established and planted in Kafu Nakasongola District, 50ha Pinus Plantation planted in Ndibulungi Luweero and 20 ha also in Nakaseke.

A company in the name of WOODLAND INVESTMENT UNITED LTD. was incorporated through the efforts, the company brought on board other fifteen new investors into forestation. The said company has ready acquired land for Commercial and Industrial forestation, the project to continue up to 6000 ha with in the next ten years.

Future impact: A number of big and medium plantations will have been planted by privet tree framers; more than 60,000 families will have received free seedlings worthy US$ 97,600 that will generate the public worthy US$ 264 Million with organization’s fixed assets and facilities worthy US $ 160,000. The environment will be facilitated effectively through this massive forestation, the entire world will benefited since these trees will be providing oxygen not only to Ugandans but to every one.

Sustainability - resource base: The Chairman and Foundation Secretary are the principal financiers of the Foundation this is from the sales of seedlings to other prominent planters the profits are put in this project and our personal savings. And other venues of finances shall include all the venues permitted by the law through donations, fund-raising activities, auctions, grants, loans and profits gained from investments and any other business carried out by the Foundation and its associates. The local people are mobilized through formation of voluntary team work We shall also join other developmental organizations that will be working towards the same obligations.

Major challenge for the field: The public is not aware of the dangers that the world is likely to face as the result of environmental degradation. Then the crisis is large that we cannot handle single handedly, we need devoted developmental partners.

Bio: Nuwamanya Tugume Francis retired from the army 1993 and joined business life, Founded a Company that is establishing 6000 Hectors of commercial and industrial Pinus plantation in Uganda. After getting involved and realizing that that tree planting could eliminate poverty in the society while preserving bio-diversity, here the issue of involving the community came in. Nuwamanya has attended many tree planting and ecological related seminars and workshops both local and International levels on self sponsorship expense. Point to note is that economy of most developing countries depends to a great extent on the production efforts of subsistence farmers in the rural areas. The production of coffee, cotton and tobacco in case of Uganda which are major exports products is done by these farmers, each family on a very small piece of family land. Even plantation products like sugarcane and tea largely depend on the efforts of peasants farmers who provide out services. Food security in most developing Countries largely depends on production by subsistence farmers. If these people can therefore be profitable involved to use their individual pieces of land, the total impact will be greater boost to bio-diversity and their livelihood will be improved ecumenically.
