Homebound Boca Raton, Inc.

Venture Field: Youth Volunteer Service

Year of Venture Launch: 2006

Name: Danielle

Role in the Venture: Co-Founder, CEO

Homebound Boca Raton Founders

Venture Description: The purpose of Homebound Boca Raton is to provide transportation to high school students as an alternative to irresponsible driving situations such as: drunk driving, over-occupancy of vehicles, and driving past the legal curfew.

Venture Origin: Being recent high school graduates ourselves, we have experienced first-hand the dangers of teen driving. On any weekend night, someone we knew chose a potentially life threatening driving situation over the only existing alternative; calling mom and dad. Now that we are college students, we see that there are better, safer alternatives.

Innovation: Organizations have attempted to reduce irresponsible driving among teens, but have failed because they were lacking key components. Homebound bases itself on these components that other organizations lacked: convenience, a smaller generation gap, a marketing plan that appeals to high school students, a public relations campaign that engages the entire community, and financial self-sufficiency.

Homebound Boca Raton Board

Impact

Impact: Homebound will impact the community by making our roads safer for all citizens of Boca Raton (about 200,000 people)and offering safe transportation alternatives to high school students on weekend nights. Also, the college students that volunteer with our organization will serve as mentors to our younger high school students.

Engagement with the community: Homebound has Campus Reps at local high schools and a team of representatives at FAU, a state college located in Boca Raton. We have worked with high schools through Key Club, PTSA, and school principals. Former State Representative Irving Slosberg has supported us through local news and in publications. Parents came to our benefit dinner and will use Homebound's weekday transportation service.

Impact and engagement progress since launch: Since being launched, we have thrown a benefit dinner to raise funds and was recently awarded a Youth Venture Grant. We have utilized PTSA listserves to raise awareness among parents and school faculty. We have also used myspace and facebook to spark interest among high school students. Appearing on local news and in publications has introduced Homebound to the community as well.

Impact and engagement strategy: Homebound will create and put into effect marketing strategies to establish Homebound as a social norm and create brand equity. Word of mouth among satisfied customers and large events targeted towards high schoolers will keep the trend going. Our web site, facebook, and myspace are always current and up to date. Newsletters will be sent to parents and annual reports will be sent to donors.

Awards: Youth Venture

Budget

Amount of Youth Venture seed grant: $1,000.00

Money raised: Our seed grant has not yet been received. We hosted a benefit dinner in September 2006 that raised $1,200.

Creative ways of raising resources: In addition to hosting a benefit dinner, utilizing the PTSA listserv, and appearing in various media outlets; we have planned several fundraising events that will engage our major publics. These events range from concerts to themed club parties to golf tournaments.

Strategy

Expansion plan for next 6 months: Fundraising and raising awareness for our cause in hopes of attracting volunteers and donations.

Plans for sustaining the project: Once the initial funds are raised, Homebound will not only be self-sufficient; it will become profitable. Vehicles will run on weekdays as a transportation service for adults in the community. We will recruit volunteers each semester, so that new students can replace volunteers who are graduating.

Vision for three years from now: Homebound hopes to have enough vehicles to sustain the demand in our community and surrouding communities.

Project impact: Our venture will impact the community by making our roads safer and reducing the amount of high school students who engage in irresponsible driving behavior on weekend nights, thus decreasing the amount of traffic incidents. Homebound will make life easier for the high school students who directly benefit from this convienent, life saving service. Subsequently, Homebound will make life easier for parents--lifting the concern that come along with a newly licensed drivers.

Youth Venture movement - what it means and how you can contribute: It is a great privelege to be part of the Youth Venture movement and be surrounded by other young adults working towards making a difference. Homebound is willing and able to stand as an example towards new Youth Ventures as well as collaborate with current Youth Ventures. We will actively recruite new venturers through our organization that otherwise may not have had the opportunity of being explosed to Youth Venture. We are always available to serve as a liason between Youth Venture and young adults.

How Homebound would influence my community. Posted February 1 '07, 3:31:50
I graduated high school in 2004 and there was no such program in my area. It would have made many nights of my life a lot safer as I was put into dangerous situations regarding driving at night. Some of my friends were involved in an alcohol related crash that resulted in serious injury. Another classmate of mine recently died in a car wreck while driving drunk. An organization in my area such as Homebound Boca Raton would make it safer for everyone in the community.

Great idea! Posted February 1 '07, 11:17:24
I am so glad to see this entry. While we should also work to reduce irresponsible drinking, it is important to provide a safety net like Homebound does.

- Jeremy Z., Washington DC

Excellent idea Posted February 2 '07, 1:57:17
I think this is an excellent idea. This should have been around years before now. These people are doing something great

Home Bound Posted February 5 '07, 23:08:43
This organization can make a huge difference in our city, Boca Raton, FL. They can prevent so many things that can effect the lives of so many people. I.E over crowded cars, drinking under the influence. With peoples knowledge of this program they can have the choice to make that desicion not to get in that car or behind the wheel. I think this is the greatest thing to happen to teen students wanting to make better decisions and have fun at the same time.

A GREAT cause she be recognized Posted February 5 '07, 23:17:59
how many cases can you think of where young adults go out to have a good time and dont think about who is going to take them home. Cabs require alot of money because you might be far away from home, which only leads to people drinking and driving. This organization will help decrease this problem. it is an amazing idea created by two women who go out and experience this problem every night and want to make a change. Funding an organization like this can make a huge difference and hopefully save the lives of many young adults!

Homebound: An Excellent Alternative Posted February 6 '07, 17:09:39
It is an unfortunate truth that widespread alcohol use has permeated the high school and even middle school landscape. Programs that aim to support rather than condemn, such as Homebound Boca Raton, are a fresh alternative to restriction groups that do not recognize the reality behind these types of situations.

I applaud HBR for their commitment to serving their immediate community and I hope to see their mission statement implemented in ohter counties and cities in the near future.

Great Idea Posted February 7 '07, 15:45:31
I grew up in boca and went to high school at boca high. I can personally attest to the ridiculous amount of irresponsible driving that goes on. Numerous friends of mine were involved in alcohol related accidents but thank god that they were okay. If a program like homebound was around back then not only would I have used it but I'm sure my friends would have.

Homebound take me home. Posted February 7 '07, 17:49:26
I am glad that there is a service that provides everyone an alternative way of getting home safely. Growing up, I was never provided with such a service and there were many I knew that had a price to pay for the unfortunate.

a way to save lives Posted February 11 '07, 23:35:10
i am a high school graduate from Spanish River High in Boca Raton and now attending FAU which is in the same town. Being aware of all the drinking and driving that goes on among high school students i think Homebound is a great way to transport teenagers around and save lives. Since i do live in the same town i see how many people will go to parties and by the time they leave its too late or "not cool" to call their parents to come and pick them up and therefore get into a car with 5 or more people.

- Beatrice Popescu, homebound boca raton, inc., FAU campus rep.

Yes to Homebound! Posted February 11 '07, 23:36:46
As Homebound's other co-founder, I can not stress enough how important this organization is to us, as well as our community. Programs like Homebound should be offered not only in our own community of Boca Raton, but ALL communities. It is time for us to take responsibility and acknowledge the reality that high school students are facing. Before we lose one more, young, promising life to traffic incidents, let us establish that it is a preventable problem. Most importantly, rather than agree that something should be done, let US do something about it.

- Korrie Martinez, Homebound Boca Raton, Inc., Co-Founder/President

homebound supporter Posted February 11 '07, 23:45:39
I think homebound is a wonderful idea because our children and grand children need help that otherwise might not be there for them, speaking as a grand mother, I think this is important,we hope our children would always do what we have taught them, but some times that is not the way of it

young people Posted February 12 '07, 15:16:31
It's great to see young people making a difference in their local community...especially enacting change that will benefit other young people! Keep up the fantastic work, Korrie!

Awesome Program Posted February 12 '07, 17:52:44
This program was such a great idea but I wonder why it is limited to high school students. It seems like drunk driving is something that happens more predominantly in the college crowd. Why not do the same for college kids or maybe if you are able to raise more funds you could expand the program. Anyway, keep up the good work!!

Great Motivation for a Great Cause Posted February 13 '07, 0:41:33
It is a very real and terrifying scenario to think of the amount of young drivers who make irresponsible decisions because they are afraid to call their parents. I think that Homebound has an excellent plan and attitude, as well as the necessary tools and motivation to make this plan a reality. Best Wishes!

Great Idea Posted February 13 '07, 23:42:23
I was stuck in countless situations like these where I eventually made the wrong decision of driving. This plan sounds like a great one and hopefully will reduce the pain of losing a loved one that too many families have to go through because of drunk driving.

- Scotty Daniels, Arizona State University Student

Great Idea!! Posted February 14 '07, 15:42:45
This is a fantastic idea. I go to college in Boca Raton and it seems like I'm always hearing stories from friends about drunk driving situations that end badly. This is a cause I could definetly see myself volunteering for. I applaud the founders of Homebound on keeping the youths of Boca safe. what is the point of the adult transportation service? Wouldn't you be better off extending the service to college students on weekdays when high schoolers dont really go out rather than adults?

- Chris, Florida Atlantic University Student

A great way to help save lives!!! Posted February 14 '07, 16:56:14
As a teacher, I have personally experienced the loss of several students in automobile accidents. This seems to be a very effective solution to a very significant problem. As a parent, I am extremely excited about the opportunity to save lives. A safe alternative is now available for those in need. Hopefully, ideas such as this will eventually expand across the country.

Homebound's Response to Questions Posted February 15 '07, 1:32:07
Thank you all so much for your feedback!! Your comments and questions are greatly appreciated.

First, I would like to explain why we chose to target high school students prior to targeting college students. In Boca Raton, most college students prefer to party in nearby cities (South Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach are all less than an hour away). High school students generally stay in the Boca Raton area when they go out. So by targeting primarily high school students, we can help a much greater amount of people, since most rides will be under 10 minutes. However, we are greatly considering cost-efficient ways to provide our services to college students upon expansion.

Secondly, the transportation service for parents will be operating primarily to generate profits. Rather than get a ride to the airport from a limo company, parents can get a ride from one of Homebound's vehicles during the week. It will cost less than a limo company would charge and all proceeds will go towards funding Homebound. This will give busy parents a convenient way to contribute to the cause.

If you have any more questions, please post them and we will be sure to answer them as soon as we can. Thanks again!!

- Danielle Pascarella, Co-Founder, Homebound Boca Raton, Inc.
