DreamCity

Venture Field: Arts & Cultural Awareness

Year of Venture Launch: 2005

Name: John

Role in the Venture: Co-Founder of DreamCity, currently serve as Executive Director

DreamCity Magazine

Venture Description: DreamCity is an arts organization based in the nation’s capital that focuses on harnessing the voices, ideas, and dreams of young adults in the D.C Metropolitan area. We utilize the arts to empower our communities from within by instilling financial literacy and educational self- reliance within young adults who participate with DreamCity. The arts is our method in which to communicate our ambition, anger, angst, and hopes to the political, business, media and academic establishment. We use the arts to take back our communities from outside forces that have imposed their wills. DreamCity is representative of our generation's future.

Venture Origin: DreamCity is a result of our prior experiences with arts organizations that did not forge life skills in their participants. DreamCity is an amalgamation of everything that we learned good and bad, while participating with these organizations. DreamCity is our own. DreamCity is the self-determination of all of the lost souls of our generation.

Innovation: DreamCity returns the arts to where it belongs. The street corners. DreamCity gathers all of the young people in the streets who not only want a better life but want to work hard to realize and achieve it. We utilize the arts to reach the unreached. Once we have reached them we begin to instill principles and values that are transforming. We use the arts to promote scholarship in every field.

DreamCity members

Impact

Impact: In 2006, DreamCity performed The 70©, an original play written by John Muller and Justin McNeil. The 70© was performed at the Hip Hop Theater Festival at the Studio Theater. The 70© premiered over the course of three weeks and offered ten free performances at the MLK Jr. Memorial Library from 7/25 - 8/12. On 8/22 we performed The 70© at American University, and on 9/21 The 70© was in Baltimore, MD. Over 4500 people have The 70©.

Engagement with the community: We have worked with Metro, DC Public Library, George Washington University, UDC, American University, DC Commission on Arts & Humanities, DC Humanities Council, DC Preservation League, News Channel 8, The Washington Post, Young Playwrights Theater, DC Public Schools, Metro Teen Aids, Hip Hop Theater Festival, DCPS, HU, etc. These organizations supported us by attending and promoiting our show.

Impact and engagement progress since launch: We have reached people in DC from the White House to the crack houses. We have brought people from all backgrounds together. Our show was attended by white, black, yellow, brown, red, rich, poor, learned, unlearned, banked, unbanked, disabled, abled, young, old, in between, male, female, gay, straight, tall, short, and every other designation that can be singled out. We are changing the game.

Impact and engagement strategy: This summer we will bring FREE performances of The 70© to the Lisner Auditorium, Atlas Performing Arts Center, & Lincoln Theater. We will reach more than 15,000 people due to the increased capacity of these venues. MLK Library only held 300 people for each show. Every show was packed with people waiting outside. Everyone who did not see The 70© this past summer will get a chance to in 2007.

Awards: Nominated for three separate DC Mayor's Arts Awards. We have been awarded grants from multiple partners. GWU awarded us the MLK service award.

DreamCity Christmas Event

Money raised: Over $16,000 -- grants, sponsorships, personal donations, & performance fees. DC Commission on Arts & Humanities, Community Foundation, Annie E. Casey Foundation, DC Hip Hop Theater Festival,

Creative ways of raising resources: We have actively pursued grants, sponsorships, and personal donations. We have received performance fees from five separate partners. We have fundraised at local street and arts festivals selling our poetry magazine. We have exchanged in-kind donation for advertising space in our program.

DreamCity Mayor's Arts Award Submission

Strategy

Expansion plan for next 6 months: We will receive our 501(c)3 non-profit TAX ID number within the next 60 days. This summer we will be bringing The 70© to the Lisner Auditorium, Atlas Performing Arts Center, and Lincoln Theater. Shows will be 100% FREE. Network within the city.

Plans for sustaining the project: We are actively applying for grants from DCCAH, CYITC, UPO, Meyer Foundation, as well as multiple foundations and grant makers. We are pursuing corporate sponsorships. We are working to secure our own community space. We initiate our own arts program as well as employing members of the community.

Vision for three years from now: We will have secured an abandoned theater in DC. We are working with Chevy Chase Bank, DC Preservation League, DC Office of Historic Preservation, DC Government, construction & development firms, civic groups, and multiple partners to identify an available theater. This will be our headquarters with a theater, computer lab, conference room, & offices. We will return art to where it belongs.

Project impact: People in the city are looking at us. We are recognized by the homeless on the streets as easily as we are by the new Mayor-elect and members of his administration. That within itself is a transformative power. DreamCity has single-handedly begun a cultural and artistic Renaissance here in DC. We have shown the true power of a unified community. We have manifested the unanswered potential of our generation. We have answered the calls of those who sing songs of justice but do not believe them to be true. We have brought together everyone in our city behind a basic common link. We have used the arts to show that we have more common threads between us than we would otherwise realize. We have empowered the community from within by showing that there is a value to the street stories and the people who struggle everyday. By being visible we have set an example for other young adults to follow behind us. We have made life easier by broadcasting our message that we all fit in somewhere. We must take pride in our selves no matter how low or high we are society. We all play an important part in our city and DreamCity recognizes the hard work that goes unrecognized. Teachers, bus drivers, librarians, street sweepers, etc. We made life easier by providing art that is seeded, rooted, and cultivated within the community. We have made life easier by providing hope to our generation and our city.

Youth Venture movement - what it means and how you can contribute: Our generation is a generation lost. Our identity is not our own. The content of our character has been hallowed. Our generation has not earned the luxuries we have been afforded. The tireless work ethic that was the bedrock of the American Civil Rights movement has been forgotten by our generation. We are a collective group of unfocused, self-absorbed, petty bleeding heart individuals. We, the youth with resources and access to education, are infatuated with the struggle from a distance. The community has been sold out. We have gotten ours and we do not give anything back. We are soulless and conduct our lives without any sense of purpose. We focus on money and material things without an understanding of how to obtain happiness. Activity masquerades as accomplishment. We want our resumes to look good but we have not stepped into the real world. I cannot explain in a mere 250 words how important YV and the YV network is to me personally and DreamCity. I was a young adult who was very angry because I had ideas and energy, but no medium in which to cultivate my ambition. I was a member of the DC Youth Advisory Council when I found out about YV. My life has fundamentally changed since. When I first met YV, I was at a community college whereas now I am on the verge of graduating from George Washington University with honors. DreamCity is a living and breathing testament to the importance of YV.

DreamCity is out here in these streets Posted December 20 '06, 2:03:29
DreamCity came to our school and told us like it is. They understand that there is life outside of our own neighborhoods. The young brothers showed us that when you decide to make a difference, it just takes time and hard work and it will come. Their group is the real deal and they are really out here in these streets. Two days I saw three of them on the bus passing out flyers.

- Eric Moten, 9th grade, Jefferson JHS

DreamCity Poets & DreamCity Theatre Group Posted December 20 '06, 16:28:24
woW, DreamCity is REALLY about the youth of our communities. I know. I have been in shows with DreamCity. Bus drivers will stop buses along 7th street get off the bus just to say werent you in the show about the 70. DreamCity's like that. We need your support as we take The 70 to H street and U street for the summer. Its going to be big for everyday folks. Everyone elesses project is good but ours is better becuz we reach the youth out here in the streets and put them in corporate situations. That is why I am loyal to DreamCity. They look out for us. DREAMCITY !!

revolutionary spirit Posted December 23 '06, 21:35:19
DreamCity is rekindling the flame of Martin and MLK and the days when young people put themselves on the front lines. I am awed and inspired by the dedication to the young adults of DC who have given up. DreamCity is providing entire groups of people here hope. They are doing what the government can't do. I feel this is just the begginning of what they have in store for DC and in deed the entire country and even youth worldwide.

- Shirly Thomas, english teacher, Cardozo SHS

the real arts Posted December 24 '06, 17:23:07
Watch the young folk. They got something to say and the city is listening. Its about time the kids out here started to stop playing around and begin to make the elders proud. These two young men, Justin and John, have come up and the city is proud to claim them as our own. Please do them right and reward them for their years of hard work out here in the community. DC can be a frightening place but these boys have no fear. That is why are deserving of winning your prize. Thank you.

- Darrell Murrary, DC Library Police, known John & Justin for more than 4 years

Much Love to DreamCity Posted December 30 '06, 22:45:49
This organization is rising up out of the ground modeled after world shaking social revolutions. I have known John, Justin, Joe, and Marcus since last year. DreamCity has made something out of nothing. They have worked so hard to make DC a better place for everyone not just youth. There are so many obstacles in their way, but they have managed to conquer them and get stronger all the while doing so. They are inspirational. You never hear about good things happening instead all you hear about is these kids with guns, drugs, and stealing cars. Youth in other cities need to link with DreamCity and they need to link with other youth. This program sounds great and I wish everyone and your group all the power and love of God as you march on. Your recognition will further propell DreamCity as they advance their message.

- Dorothy Suggs, 3rd grade teacher, Park View Elementary School, DCPS

DC Changemakers Posted January 2 '07, 14:57:27
To Whom It May Concern:

If you are looking for true changemakers of our generation and changemakers that are visible in their own communties, the young people of DreamCity are your meal ticket. They have a fresh, orginal, and truthful voice. Out of the harrowing experiances that youth in DC and all other urban communities go through, the young people of DreamCity have organized so quickly. They alreay have the ear of the Mayor while they have internalized the youth that are out here starving for opportunties and in group homes and similar situations. Your recognition is an investment into the future of our nation's capital. You can further empower DreamCity and allow them to reach more youth in not just DC but throughout the East Coast and Mid-Atlantic area. As previous posters have remarked, DreamCity has changed the tone here in DC. They became a part of DC history and legend by putting their show, The 70, on this summer at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library. Their shows were free. I brought 13 people who are in the custody of the city with me. They all enjoyed it and it opened their eyes to what hard work can bring you. They made the theater and the arts attractive to people who only see MTV and the negative aspects of the entertainment industry. They are trailblazers and that is what I believe this competetion is for. The other young man who cleaned up a park in NYC has the similar ambition and talent that DreamCity has. These young people come from the city and what they have done is a parable for how young people should and can accomplish in the face of hopelessness, violence, and inequality. Your continued support will push them farther and longer as they are providing free shows again this summer. Thank you for your time. Please do the right thing and reward these changemakers.

- Gerald Walker, DC Parks & Recreation, gang outreach worker in Ward 1 and Ward 2

An Epic Rising Posted January 2 '07, 17:27:06
I have had the pleasure of meeting several of these young social entreprenuers, and I must attest to their conviction and work ethic. I am a 56 year old native Washingtonian and grandmother, and I am sure that with the support of the community at-large this organization could be an epic social rising.

Yes. DreamCity helps out the community. Posted January 5 '07, 20:29:26
Hi. My name is Lavernne Williams. DreamCity helps out us, the adult learners and regular everyday people. I am studying for my GED at Carlos Rosario (11th & Harvard Streets - Uptown) and they treeted me like I was a rich person from Bethesda or Powtomac. They saved us seats in the front row. Ms. Joan brought our class to Martin Luther King Junior Library to see the play they did, The 70. I know the 70. I grew up in DC when theree useed to be only grass fields in some places now. The play was honest and true. I like when people are not fake. Everyone is fake to us in our world. People with money and politics forgets about regular people. DreamCity and The 70 is for regular people. They might be young but it was the young that made the governmment free us from slavery in the 1960s. Mr. Justin and Mr. John are examples for the grown people like me because, they are black and white but best friends and they show us that everyone is equal. I liked the play and my class will be going again this summer. Thank you. Lavernne Williams 817 Hobart Street NW

DreamCity Renaissance Posted February 2 '07, 15:54:04
Taking nothing away from other YV teams, but DreamCity is already making history. Really, this group of young people are putting down the history and the culture of DC for the entire world to see. They might be small now (getting bigger everyday) but the sky is their limit. They do the photos, the poetry, the plays, and thats not even what they really do. Their mission is using the arts to change the lives of young people by using art to advocate for a change in public policy. They have put in years and have now been honored by the Mayor of Washington, DC. They make history everyday and set precedents. YES SIR --- DreamCity is historic !

- Demetrias Turley

DC arts --- theater and poetry and all arts Posted February 3 '07, 21:13:06
this organization is well deserving of winning your award and getting the recognition by Staples. They work tirelessy out here in the community for the youth of the city. They do not have rich parents or big funders (yet). They make the most of what little they have. Our youth in our cities must be recognized. We often forget about the youth of our cities that are out here making life better, because we only here about the violence and drugs and robberies. Please, do the right thing and give DreamCity this award. They are moving very quickly in their organizing and this will be another step in the right direction for these young people who are dedicated to the youth of the neighborhoods. These guys represent the best of not only DC but all urban youth. They are role models for not only youth but everyone, this will help them get more notice outside of just the city (DC). Thank you. 202 727 1616

dont stunt on DREAMCITY Posted February 5 '07, 14:37:04
DREAMCITY has to win this contest. dont stunt on us and forget the youth out here who struggle everyday to better their lives, schools, neighborhoods, city

DREAMCITY has made a big something out of a lot of nothing

my life has been changed during my time with them and doing their events. I just made the HONOR ROLL last friay. it is the first time that I made at this school and DREAMCITY helped show me that I should sit in the front of the class and not the back corner. they showed me what a scholar should be and a what leader is

ditto ASAP Posted February 5 '07, 14:45:16
My man wes just posted a comment for his support of DreamCity Poets. I will now too.

I ditto what he said and add my own testimony on behalf of DreamCity. They give it to you real deal. Everyone wants to be soft and tell us to do this or do that but they dont tell us why. They showed us that we need to educate ourselves and seek information if it is not being taught or give to us. Like they said, an educated young person from the hood is a walking weapon against everyone who dumps on us. Society blames us for everything bad and never never never NEVER rewards us for anything. We DreamCity gets recognized they really bring it back to us. you can call me at 202 610 9760 to verify my comments please call me ASAP so I can make sure that they WIN !!!

Investment in DreamCity's future Posted February 6 '07, 14:54:19
Good afternoon.

I have seen this organization develop and mature since its infancy. It has been a sight to be seen. They have maintained their focus with limited resources. Usually, money detoriates the quality of art yet I know that these young people are in need of resources to continue to pursue their dreams. The social implications of what DreamCity is doing cannot be measured over the short- term. In time, DreamCity and their workd will not only be known with DC or just the US but throughout the entire world. I have been around long enough to know it when I see it and these young people are of a different breed. They have the ability, drive, and work ethic to go far. Please help them out and recognize their many accomplishments.

Recommendation for DreamCity changemakers Posted February 6 '07, 23:40:43
I am a professor of Sociology at American Professor and can attest to the spirit of DreamCity. Their work has invaded my classroom and provoked my students to adopt a new and energetic sense of service to communities here in DC that have long been neglected. Their use of the arts to motivate our youth to civic activism is what is needed to reach them where they are. It has been an honor to work with these young men and women. They made an amazing presentation and I am looking forward to their show this summer. Every college student in DC and surrounding areas should see their work as it is inspiring !

That Was Easy Judges Panel Comment Posted March 13 '07, 9:01:59
Dream City’s great vision is clear throughout their detailed and articulate application where their passion for their idea can be seen. Team members focused on vital aspects of their organization’s budget and elaborated on the importance of sustainability. While Dream City has a great idea filled with diversity, the entry lacks objective data points, making it hard to judge the effectiveness and long term strategy. In the future, the judges hope that this team’s bigger vision will encompass greater activities rather than focusing only on the one success of their play “The 70”.

(Reply to: "That Was Easy Judges Panel Comment")
Our goal is to become a full fledged theatre company, producing from three to five shows a year.

To engage 150 youth aged 12 - 23 in intensive life training which integrates the arts. Resume building can be expressed through an open mic forum. Innovative ideas.

To enagage 30 youth aged 14-19 with administrative skills, such as faxes, emails, writting proposals, grants, corporate outreach.

Last year more than 3800 people saw our show. Every year we want to grow our audiences by 75% so this year more than 6800 people will see our shows at various locations throughout the city.

We must continue to network within the city but also begin gaining a national consensus. This will be achieved through our innovative programming.

We will also be working with DC Writers Corps to establish a joint youth slam team that is competitive for each year's national championship.

We are also looking at securing a property on Georgia Avenue NW.

All of these goals will three important resources, 1. community support 2. time and 3. $$$$ money $$$$

Passion with honesty and heart Posted March 29 '07, 16:58:05
From Aotearoa (New Zealand)I tuatoko you(stand up and lend my love and support to you). An ancient Maori (indigenous people of NZ) proverb came to my mind when I read your submission -"He nui maunga, e kore e taea te whakaneke; he ngaru moana, mā te ihu o te waka e wāhi". Which translates as -'A big mountain cannot be moved along, but a great ocean wave can be pierced by the prow of a canoe’. The solution of some problems is as difficult as moving a mountain. Others, however, can be solved as easily as the canoe parts the wave with the right vessel, i.e. the instrument, method and technology (Mead and Grove, 2001,p.102). May your passionate heart and ruthless honestly guide you in your quest. Arohanui, Cheryl Moana

Youth of DC needs this change. Posted March 30 '07, 8:10:55
I volunteer with another performing arts group for teenagers in DC. We all see amazing changes in our young people as they stretch outside their boundaries to create art from their experiences. DreamCity fosters youth to work toward positive change within their communites and within themselves. In DC this change has been long overdue.

organizations making a change in DC Posted April 1 '07, 9:51:41
(Reply to: "Youth of DC needs this change.")
Yes. There are many organizations and individuals making a measurable and visible difference in our city and instilling confidence in our young adults.

Young Playwrights Theatre, City At Peace, CHIME, The Shakespeers Company of the Shakespeare Theatre Company, Life Pieces to MasterPieces, FLY -- Facilitating Leadership in Youth, Mentors INC, The Higher Achievement Program (shout to Ward 7 !!! pump it up pump it up), East Capital Center for Change, Peaceoholics, MetroTeen Aids, Northeast Performing Arts Group, Words Beats & Life Inc, DC Creative Writting Workshop, DC Witerscorps, the Latin American Youth Center and CentroNia's programs, all of the organizations in the Butler building on 15th ST. NW, the Sitar Center, Pasa Nuevo, Urban Alliance, Hoop Dreams, DC-CAP, Young DC newspaper .................

These are just some of the many organizations making a difference in the lives of young adults in the city --- some using arts others using life skills but all using education to better the lives and potential of the young adults in our city.

Individuals like Mr. Ronald Moten, Patrick Crowley, Karen Evans, Karen Zacarias, Jose Dominguez, Kenyatta Rogers, Lamont Carey, Anu Yadav, Quique Aviles are the ones who we look to as the role models. We are following in their footsteps.

- John Muller, DreamCity

DreamCity Makes Me Proud.... Posted April 5 '07, 15:27:18
Proud to work with the youth, and understand that it is through them that we can see our futures morph into something better. DreamCity understands that the notion of an effective youth movement is not something that can happen over night, but they are unafraid of hardwork and adversity. These are admirable traits...I am lucky to know some of these young men and women....like the title says.....you make me proud

DreamCity is an organization that produces hope as well as theatre, in their engagement with the usually neglected majority people of DC. They have accomplished an unheard of amount for a brand-new organization and deserve all the support they can get as they become an institution DC so badly needs. Vote for DreamCity!

Full support of John Mueller and DreamCity Posted April 5 '07, 19:53:01
I first met John when he transferred to GW, I was a graduate student and he was an undergraduate. He and I would talk about work ethic and scholarship...we had different views on both, however, I can see from John's work with DreamCity, we actually agreed the whole time. John has matured and grown into a great community leader. I have had the pleasure of being on a quasi-panel with him at the George Washington University and am impressed with his tenacity in seeing his dreams come to pass. As the fouder and President of the GW Black Alumni Association, we are in support of DreamCity!

Whats up Joe Black ?

Thank you for your support.

Yes, I have come a long way with DreamCity.

I was at the Avalon a couple of weeks ago to see a French film. Have you talked to Marc?

DreamCity is for the city, by the city, and of the city.
