Broadway At The Cafe
Venture Field: Mentoring
Year of Venture Launch: 2006
Name: Carly
Role in the Venture: Carly, Director
Venture Description: Our venture is a program for kids wanting to sing and perform Broadway songs in a safe substance free and non violent atmosphere. The older teens in the group mentor the younger kids by helping them with learning the craft of performing, and by showing the younger kids that positive life choices are rewarding. We picked The Sad Cafe a non profit music venue that was having financial problems to team up with. Their mission statement, as ours, is to promote and support positive lifestyles is an important one for all communities to have. Our theater program will breath new life into The Sad Cafe and help get our message out to kids.
Venture Origin: Lauren and I were in a Broadway Revue together in the summer of 2005. We were the two youngest in the show and learned a lot from the older people in the cast. When the show was done we talked about doing a similar project where older teens would be mentoring younger kids in helping them with their craft and being positive role models.
Innovation: Our group is working on the age old problem of giving kids a reason for not getting involved with any type of substance abuse. We are giving them a place and a fun activity to become involved with. We are doing this by being partnered with an all ages music venue that promotes healthy life choices and has a zero tolerance for any type of abuse.
Impact
Impact: We have impacted the lives of more than 40 kids that practice and are performing in our shows. As we gain more kids our ensemble gets larger and our message to the community that kids that have positive things to do, choose to live a positive lifestyle without drugs, alcohol, and violence. We have had a huge impact for The Sad Cafe, gaining them recognition and support for all the wonderful programs they have that involve youth.
Engagement with the community: The Sad Cafe in Plaistow.NH, has partnered with us in
providing their place for us to rehearse and hold our
shows. They are a perfect fit for us as their mission of
positive life choices and zero abuse of any kind is also
their mission. Moynihan lumber donated materials for our
props, a local copy shop did our playbill and others made
donations by taking out ads in our playbill.
Impact and engagement progress since launch: We have many more kids than the 14 that started with us. They all feel ownership to our venture and committed to living positive lifestyles. The Sad Cafe is seeing an increase in support from the community. Attendance to other programs has increased and they believe that our committment to ourselves and to them is what brought this new attention and support.
Impact and engagement strategy: When we first started our venture we notified the local
newspaper. They did a wonderful article on us and we plan
on having them come back for a "look at where they are now"
type article. We are also going to promote this show on our
local community cable by doing little clips of the show,
interviewing some of the kids to why this venture is
important to them and asking for support.
Awards: Youth Venture
Budget
Amount of Youth Venture seed grant: $864.00
Money raised: We have raised an additional $1,800.00 (approximate). The
money came from our split on admissions from our 1st show,
ads sold in the playbill, donations, raffles and a small
production fee.
Creative ways of raising resources: We have a production fee of $30.00 per kid. We are getting
$15.00 of that amount, the other $15.00 is going toward a
tshirt and DVD of the show. We also sell ads in the
playbill at a very reasonable amount of money. We are putting together a cook book of favorite recipes of the kids to sell.
Strategy
Expansion plan for next 6 months: We will be doing our third show in the next period of 6
months. We hope to have more kids involved in the show and
in the process of picking which musicals to do. We would
also like to start taking our show to nursing homes by our
third show.
Plans for sustaining the project: By having everyone involved feel ownership to this venture.
We have the older kids involved with working to sustain the
venture now with the younger kids learning what needs to be
done to keep it going. Grant writing and finding funds
will always be the biggest challenge.
Vision for three years from now: In three years I see this program as a model helping other communities set up similar programs where older teens mentor vunerable younger kids as safe positive role models. It does not have to be theater, it can be any program that brings passion and good role models together. I know in 3 years The Sad Cafe will be fiscally sounder and we will have been a big part of them reaching that point.
Project impact: We have made life easier for our community by providing a
place where any kid under the age of 20 wanting to be in
our program can be. We have endless roles on stage and behind the scenes. Our shows are made up of
selected songs from 4 different musicals allowing kids that
feel intimidated by a lot of lines in a play to still be
able to perform in a musical. If the stage is still intimidating, they can build sets, paint, sew but mostly just be a part of who we are and who we are becoming. We are striving to be a
place of fun and making the committment of sharing our
craft with one another and making healthy positive life
choices. We are giving parents the peace of mind that
leaving their younger children with us will be a positive
experience. We are helping The Sad Cafe, a non profit venue, with many great programs stay open in our community. The work that they do in addressing social issues of peer pressure, substance abuse, safe dating, and more is so important to our teens and community.
Youth Venture movement - what it means and how you can contribute: Being a part of The Youth Venture movement has been an
incredible experience for me. I feel so blessed to have
been introduced to this amazing group. They have fully
supported and guided me and my decisions. I have
participated in their conference calls allowing me to
listen to experts and other ventureres on different
subjects. I know that our group always mentions in all our
correspondence that we are a Youth Venture team. Our t-
shirts that are being made are going to carry the logo for
The Youth Venture. When people ask we always explain what
the Youth Venture is all about. Someday we (venture teams)
can give back to them.

Broadway at The Cafe A Star!
Posted December 7 '06, 10:04:32
The Broadway at the Cafe Youth Venture Project has been an enormous success and garnered much needed attention and support for The Sad Cafe, a nonprofit serving youth. Ms. Starr and the other youth team members created a unique experience for youth in our community, adding a youth voice to local arts activities and enhancing the prevention protective factors so necessary to building safe and drug free communtites for our youth today. We are very proud to be associated with this Venture and very proud of the youth in our community. I, peronally, have never been more impressed by a young person's dedication, talent and enthusiasm, than that which Ms. Starr has demonstrated.

Broadway @ the cafe is an amazing expirience for kids and teens alike!
Posted January 18 '07, 17:45:07
I've been in both "back to broadways" and Carly is amazing. She is my hero, my idol, my friend, and my inspiration to act and perform someday on broadway. Back to broadway let's us expirience the rush and excitement of performing and doing our best in front a live audience. It builds up our confidence and makes us feel like stars. The younger kids such as myself learn so much from the older kids. They teach us not only how to act, sing, and do our best, but also about disipline,hard- work. The enviroment at the sad cafe' is safe, fun, and family friendly. I personally feel at home their. All of us crazy theatre people love eachother, we're just like one big family, always willing to let people join the family and shine on stage with us. Not only is broadway at the cafe' inspirational and amazing, but it is also alot of fun. We're always laughing and having a good time. Carly is always open to our ideas about the show. I could just go on and on about this, it's basically one of my favorite things in the whole world, and I want the whole world to know about this wonderful program and it's wonderful director! No one deserves that grant more than broadway at the cafe.

my favorite place

The sad cafe is a great place to hang with your friends. At the sad cafe there is no drug abuse or kids being pressured to do drugs. It is one of the most safest places in Plaistow. One great thing about the sad cafe is the way they treat kids, they make us feel welcome and safe. Also my parents and many other parents also think the sad cafe is a great place too. Not only parents but the neiborhood also thinks so too.

i have been doing the sad cafe's thearter program for 3 years now. and it has a made a huge impact on my life. i have defintly come a long way from the beginning. before i started the sad cafe, i was a shy girl, who thought that everyone was watching me. now i am not afaid to get up there and do what i love to do. it is good for the youth because it keeps you away from peer pressure, drugs, and other bad influences. it gives you a chance to find out who you are and what you are good at. i am so happy that i have a place to go after school like the sad cafe, where everyone accepts you for who you are. it's a wonderful experiance.

THE SAD IS AWESOME!
Posted January 18 '07, 18:07:32
I've been going to the Sad Cafe for about 2 years now and I just can't get enough of it! The Sad is so much fun because you get to act, sing, and dance! Also, you make loads of new friends there. It's a great place to hang out. I love it. Carly is a very good director; she knows how to keep things under control and she knows what she's doing all of the time. So, overall, the Sad is definetly a positive place to go to because you learn how to act, you meet new people, and it is a drug-free zone, which is cool. The Sad is awesome!

How The Sad Cafe changed my life
Posted January 18 '07, 18:11:04
My name is Natalie and i take theatre at the sad cafe. Being apart of the sad cafe is really important to me because it lets you express yourself. There are lots of preteens and teens who like to do the same thing as you. I just recently joined, but i have heard lots of great stories about the kids who have been hear for a long time. it also distracts us from taking drugs and smoking. That is one reason it is really important to me. I don't go to the same school as the other kids so if the sad cafe was ever to close, i would never see these kids again and that would be really uppsetting because even though this is only my second session, they have really become my best friends outside of school so my point is, The Sad Cafe is my antidrug.

a safe fun place
Posted January 18 '07, 18:29:04
At 14 my son's band played in public for the first time at "the Sad". It was a positive experience which I know helped build his self confidence and contributed to the hard working well adjusted 20 year old he is today. My youngest child is experiencing the same feeling of "sucess" in the theatre arts with Carly . We as parents are very lucky to have the "Sad CAfe" in our area and applaud all the people there who work tirelessly to give our kids so much.

Terrific opportunity at the Sad Cafe

I'm a parent of two pre-teens who have just begun rehearsals for an upcoming show. Carly , Lauren, and their crew are an amazing group of people and care about all the kids, and encourage them to have fun and share their love of theater and music. The Theater Department of the Sad Cafe has provided a terrific opportunity for kids to do what they love in a safe, positive environment. We love the Sad Cafe! Please support this program!

i am a new drama student to the sad Cafe and so far i'm loving it:> the reason way i joined the sad cafe was parshly because my best friend or my neighbor was a part of the programs and she told me that it was so much fun to be apart of their programs. one afternoon she had drama and i had been over her house so i got permission to stay with her at the sad and see if i would like to be apart of the next show. when i walked into the sad i felt safe just to know that i was in a positive thiking area and also a drug free area. now that i am a member of the sad i made a lot ogf new friends and i feel a part of a fun, positive, freindly, drug free invoroment and i cant get enough of it!!!!!!!

Best place to go!!!
Posted January 21 '07, 12:17:37
I have been in both of the "Back to Broadway" productions and they are the best times I've had in my life! Carly is the best director she is sooo nice to work with. She lets us give her ideas and really listens to the cast. The Sad Cafe, where we perform, is a great place to have fun and be yourself in a very safe and caring environmnet. I used to be really shy around people I didn't know but when I came to the Broadway at the Cafe I made so many new friends. We are a family and we don't judge or criticize each other! Carly and the Broadway at the Sad group deserve this grant. The money will have a positive impact and the kids would really appreciate it too!! This is the best place to send your kids when you want them to be safe and taken good care of when you can't be there.

I am Carly's mom and I am so proud of what she is doing. Carly and the other older teens set a great example to the younger kids on living substance free and accepting everyone for who they are. There are no small parts on or off stage, everyone is equally important to make a show or community work. The older kids show so much respect and admiration for each other and this type of positive behavior trickles down to the younger ones. They are making a positive difference in our community and we hope that will trickle to all our surrounding communities.

They say "Don't be SAD get GLAD" I say "Be Glad for the SAD!!!" and its support for "Broadway at the Cafe". My son John has been in five main stage theater productions at the North Shore Music Theater in Beverly Ma. He is 11 years old and has just become involved in working with Carly in her latest production of a "Broadway Review". I am thrilled for John to be working with such dedicated, energetic and positive young people. John has worked with professional actors from Broadway New York at the NSMT and is now working with wonderful young role models who are also helping him learn his craft. Thank you so much for this opportunity!!!

I love the sad cafe
Posted January 23 '07, 20:20:28
Without the sad cafe a lot of us kids may be home alone watching TV. But now I go to the sad cafe and Ive made tons of new friends! They also give me time to work on my homework and have a snack. They offer food you can buy and if you dont have any money they give you chips and water FREE! I also have developed as an actress and a singer. They give you full one on one attention and tell you how to make what your doing wrong better! It has also turned me on to broadway, and now I'd be lost without broadway! All in all the sad cafe is the best place for kids to hang out in a clean and safe advirement, and they deserve this grant more than anybody!

Mentoring Our Youth Through Theater
Posted January 23 '07, 20:41:22
My daughter has been attending the youth theater at the Sad Cafe for almost two years now and I can not stress enough how important this program is to our children and our community. Being a part of this group has given my daughter so many things. Not only has it given her confidence, she has also learned how important it is to be a part of a team and be a responsible team player. In a theater production each person is valuable and each team member relies on each other. It is my belief that children turn to drugs and other harmful activities because they are bored and do not have a sense of a caring environment. The Sad Cafe gives these kids a safe haven and a caring environment. Being mentored by older teens that have a purpose and a passion sets such a wonderful example. Carly Starr is a wonderful role model. I am so grateful that my daugther has the opportunity to be a part of The Sad Cafe Theater team.

My kids participate in the theater program at the Sad Cafe and I think it's great, it's a safe place for the kids to go and have an outlet and they love doing the plays. Our town doesn't have a boys and girls club or anything close, but the Sad Cafe, so when I moved here 5 yrs ago, I was happy to hear about it, and the kids love it.

The Sad Cafe is so lucky
Posted January 25 '07, 20:32:10
This is such a great program that Carly and Lauren have committed themselves to. They have surrounded themselves with other teens that live substance free and believe in showing younger kids that it's okay to want to stay clean, healthy, and safe. They are much admired by the younger kids, parents and our community. They have truly given ownership to a healthy project to be involved with. It is wonderful to see more and more kids want to be involved with this program.

Thank you for the Sad Cafe
Posted January 28 '07, 11:12:48
My nine year old daughter was welcomed into the Sad Cafe last Fall. She had never been in a Play. It was a great adventure for her. She thrived being up on stage. She was made important in all parts of the production..ie..learning her lines, creating the costumes, the stage, make up and most of all the self esteem she felt was overwhelming. On the other side of the Sad Cafe is the safe enviorment for our teens. I have two teens at the moment but one child is getting our attention more than the other :) The concerts the Sad Cafe put on is a wonderful place to send your teen and you will will know that they are in safe place. Kids of their own age and the knowledge that no alcohol or drugs can be brought in is a great relief. I will admit I sat outside in my car during the first concert but I really did not have to. There is good control by all that run the program. I sincerely hope that the funding for this theater continues. The people are great and what they are doing for our children is much needed. thank you.

So Pleased to See Her Follow Her Passion
Posted January 29 '07, 15:38:43
Ever since she was born, Carly's Mom and I (Dad) have hoped and prayed that she'd find a passion and pursue it, knowing that the time spent in this activity is not only enriching in itself, but allows her to meet and associate with other like-minded young people, at the same time leaving little time for other things which could be not only less enriching but also a potential source of trouble. With just a litle encouragement from us, Carly did just that. Drama became her thing, and she can't get enough of it. When it comes to this, she's driven, period, and she passes that enthusiasm on to everyone with whom she works, whether it be Broadway at the Cafe or any of the other productions she performs in. I'm proud that she found her passion, that she's pursuing it, sharing that passion with others, and assuming a degree of responsibility that many young people her age just don't (or can't or won't) do. As a local high school teacher of mostly juniors and seniors, I observe this malaise all too often. For these and so many other reasons, I'm very proud of Carly and the person she has become.

Substance abuse prevention programming at its' best!
Posted February 6 '07, 12:00:06
Broadway at the Cafe coupled with other teen programs at The Sad Cafe are truly national models. As a substance abuse prevention advocate in the state of NH for over 20years, programming for teens at The Sad Cafe is exemplary.

National statistics on alcohol and drug use with teens is staggering
Posted February 19 '07, 15:44:41
The Centers for Disease Control reports that 40% of our nations 9th graders reported having tried alcohol before the age of 13 and had used alcohol in the past month. They also report that 30% of teens have been offered, sold or given an illegal drug before the age of 13. As a parent I am shaken by these statistics and think that more programs of older teens that are great role models mentoring younger pre teens and teens in such activities as music, theater and sports is a healthy positive solution. I for one commend all teens that have made the right choices in their lives. Congratulations and best of luck with your project, you are creating the right kind of peer pressure.

Your Venture seems really fun – it provides a great opportunity for young people and source of joy for the community. It also looks like you have set it up well to be sustainable into the future. With such a strong base right now, we encourage you to increase your outreach to try to deepen your community impact. It would be great to have more community involvement beyond your immediate group. See if you can bring the power of your terrific youth-led initiative and the positive energy surrounding it to address a challenging problem in your community.
