Beautiful non-violent Resistance

Country: Palestine

Organization: Alrowwad Cultural and Theatre Training Center

2) Focus of activity: Education and Training

3) Start Year: 1998

4) Positioning in the mosaic of solutions:

  •      Main barrier addressed: Culture of violence
  •      Main principle addressed: Build non-violent paths to rights, access & assets

    5) Description of initiative: Some people regret the past. The great drama is if our present is still more beautiful than our future. As Palestinian, the image stereotyped in the media is to show Palestinians as only capable of throwing stones or burning tires or exploding themselves, all of which dehumanize them. Being born and grown up in a refugee camp under Israeli occupation, I have witnessed all the evolution in the life of a refugee after 1967. I didn’t want our children to be just other numbers on lists of martyrs or handicapped for the rest of their lives, or continue to reproduce the same images shown in the media or end up in prison or explode themselves. I offer them a new nonviolent way of self expression, peaceful and beautiful way to resist and respond to violence through Theatre, arts and education. This also allows them to show another image of their beauty and humanity and break up the stereotypes. Aida camp has no green spaces or playgrounds, or a place where children can express themselves in a constructive and positive way. With the help of some friends, I created Alrowwad theatre center to offer an alternative to the street and its violence. In addition, through theatre and dance performances outside the country, we give them the occasion to meet with the other regardless of his race or religion, and both will look at each other as human beings living in the same world and as equal partners to build a better future for themselves and the generations to come. We are all human beings with equal rights and responsibilities to make this world worth living in, in real and respecting peace.

    6) Description of innovation: We are using a peaceful and a beautiful mean to provide possibilities for positive peaceful (non-violent), active and constructive ways of self-expression and evacuation of stress and anger linked to the violence due to the frequent incursions by the Israeli occupation army in Aida camp-Bethlehem and the neighboring areas. Our main interest in this stage is to build up peace inside our children as a way to promote building a larger peace in the larger community and the world. Gandhi said: “If we want to make a war against war, we have to start with children”. This is one of my leading keys to work with children as a mean to build a future generation familiar with stereotypes and working to go beyond them to understand and meet the other whether the other is Muslim, Christian, Jew, Buddhist or whatever. This work also involves parents and teachers in schools so that our work is complementary to each other.

    7) Delivery model: We are a non-governmental independent organization, depending mainly on volunteers and in the stage of institutionalization, we reach out to people, schools, and other organizations through Advocacy visits, performances in theatre, dance, puppets, video and photography training, as well as other artistic competition. Women and mothers as motors of the society are our main partners in this work. Social workers in schools have their role in this work.

    8) Key operational partnerships: We are partnering with the families, teachers and schools, Council of parents in the schools, Popular Service Committee in Aida camp, Union of Palestinian Youth Centers, and Ministry of Culture and Information. Other local partners include Edward Said Music center, National Music center in Nablus, AlKamandjati association, Badil center. We have as well international partners including the Friends of Alrowwad in France, Switzerland and USA. We have recieved funding for specific short term projects from UNRWA, UNDP, Representative Office of the Netherlands, Hoping Foundation-UK, French Consulate in Jerusalem, Eurpoeam Commission in Jerusalem, Jerusalem Fund-USA among others.

    9) Financial model: When we started in 1998, the main slogan was “With or without money, we are going to do it”. With the creation of the Friends of Alrowwad, we have the main donors. We also worked and presently working on projects financed by UNRWA, UNDP, French Consulate. The results of some training ended by products that are commercialized and make a money income including post cards from the photography training workshops, video films from the video filming and editing workshops, embroidery products from the women unit in Alrowwad center, booklets produced by children in Alrowwad (Guide to Aida Camp). In addition, performances and theatre tours (local and international) generate also funds. Our Website also contributes to make same income through free will donations.

              • Costs as percentage of income: 80%

              • Financing: Alrowwad organization is partly financed through donations by the friends of Alrowwad in France, Switzerland and USA as well as local and visiting donors. Supportive education program contributes about 3% and membership fees in the center contributes about 0.1%. Income from activities’ products and publications generate about 5% of income as well (for the moment since this started this year). We are working on generating sustainable means for our programs. The main key is as well the volunteerism of most of our trainers.

    10) Effectiveness

              • Project outcomes: The main outcomes on local level is to have a balanced generation who is open-minded, with positive attitudes and means to express himself through peaceful, beautiful and productive means. This generation would be more stable and less stressed, depressed and angry because of evacuation of all this frustration building up due to continuous oppression and frequent incursions by the Israeli army. Alrowwad has already performed in Sweden, Denmark, Egypt, France, Belgium and USA. On international level, this will permit Palestinian children to show another image of themselves and their people, culture and heritage, their beauty and their humanity. These tours permit the children to meet with the "others", give opportunities to meeting and dialogue and better understand them

              • Number of clients in past year: Aida camp accommodates 4700 people, 66% of whom are under 18 years old, and more than52% are females. In 2005, Alrowwad program benefited directly more than 1400 children, and 400 adults out of the 4700 inhabitants of the camp. Our performances, video projections or my conferences have been seen by more than 5000 in Palestine and more than 20,000 internationally were introduced to Alrowwad program and it’s beautiful resistance idea. We do not have statistics about people visiting our website. Our peaceful resistance program have gained more than 300 new friends of Alrowwad during our last year theatre tour in USA. About 100 persons/year contacted me after website visit, requested information about our programs or to volunteer. 15 people volunteered in our center

    11) Scaling up strategy

              • Stage of the initiative: Scaling Up stage.

              • Expansion plan: Until now, Alrowwad has worked with 5 communities of refugees in the West bank. In 2007-2009, Alrowwad plans to work in the rest of the 19 refugee camps in the West Bank- Palestine to introduce the idea of non-violent beautiful resistance through theatre, dance, arts and Education. Alrowwad continues to seek partners locally and internationally

    12) Origin of the initiative: I originated the initiative in 98 in Aida camp/Bethlehem,which has been heavily touched by the Israeli army frequent incursions. The camp has no green spaces or playgrounds for children to play. The main victims are children and women who suffer from closures, evacuation of schools and curfews due to military incursions. The main activities for children are in the street, where children play, fight with each other, or be in continuous confrontation with Israeli soldiers during incursions. A lot of children have heavily suffered physically and psychologically (stress, violence with each other, wetting their beds) as well as decrease in school progress. It was important to work on dealing with these problems and challenges in order to help them find the peace within before going forward and work on the local/regional and global levels. I have a team helping.

    Beautiful Resistance Posted November 26 '06, 12:03:19
My husband and I hosted three adults and 11 kids from Al Rowwad at our home in the summer of 2005 for five days when they gave three performances here in Connecticut. The Al Rowwad kids are amazing -- articulate, artistic, funny, open-minded, joyful and humane. It's hard to imagine, perhaps, but we so fell in love with these kids and with the work that Abed (Abdelfattah) and the other Al Rowwad trainers do that we wept -- my husband weeping! -- when they left and for days after. The Al Rowwad kids were born into and have lived all their lives under the longest and most brutal miliary occupation of modern times. The work that Abed and the others at Al Rowwad do in educating and training these children to be strong, morally-centered human beings as well as artists in the midst of the horrors of occupation is nothing short of miraculous. That's why I support Al Rowwad as much as I can and I encourage other individuals and organization to do the same

Tackling Ethnic, Religious and Political Violence In Nigeria Through Individual Transformation Posted November 26 '06, 17:34:06
    (Reply to: "Beautiful Resistance")
It is unfortunate that children are made to lose their innocense at tender ages, live through nightmares of horrendous killing, rape of siblings right there in their presence, exchange the supermarket toys for AK47 and its like and generally live to either believe that war or aggresion is the only way to be relevant in society or they cringe for life from fear of anything and everything. For such rare Kids who did not only survive the trauma but were able to retain a good sense of humour and exhubing hope to live once more in free society, I congratulate them. In relatively or seemingly peaceful society like my country Nigeria, children and women are main victims of sporadic ethnic, political and religious fighting that has characterised our landscape in a nation of low nationalistic patriotism and high group identities. It is sad that Nigerians know about the Americans and Europeans than they know about their fellow county people and thus have failed to appreciate each section for who they are and what their strongpoints and weaknesses are that may be harnest into one whole national positive plane. It is time to take peace building from the comfort of government houses and workshops in city five star hotels to addressing individuals one at a time who would go back to their group to impact a better understang of the other side of the divide. Lets not only save the lives of women and children but also save the latter from life-long nightmares of bloodshed.

    World change--one step at a time Posted November 26 '06, 17:19:07
When the Aida campgroup came to the USA, I was privileged to meet the young people and their leaders. I was impressed with the idealism and the stated objectives of the participants. That the Aida camp leaders could devote themselves in such an unselfish way to help young, oppressed, and disadvantaged individuals to develop as responsible, peace-oriented members of society in a so wracked with violence and suffering is an inspiration to all.

network of peace theatres? Posted November 27 '06, 8:50:45
Is there a network/mosaic for those who use theatre to activise peace. I am aware that there is a vibrant tradition of this from Gandhi's work but while I know some of the coordinators of theatrical groups, I am not aware of practical information such as: how youth in any particular locality could quickly search for a peace theatre mentor, and how the tacit knowledge of peace plays emanating from 75+ years of gandhi practice is shared, experienced... chris.macrae@yahoo.co.uk

    A REMARKABLE PROGRAM Posted November 27 '06, 16:19:04
When Alrowwad was in the U.S, I had the priviledge of meeting the children and the organizers and filmed and broadcasted their stage production for television. I was very impressed with the concept and the courage of the children and the Alrowwad organizers, who created such a proud, moving and powerful statement of an oppressed people, within the nonviolent vehicle of theater and proudly present it to an American audience. I am certain that my viewing audience and I, learned more about the plight of the Palestinians in one Alrowwad performance; than in years of listening to the American media, regarding the Palestinian issue. I urge anyone reading my comments to support this remarkable program and those who created it. I admiringly commend this program and its creator, and hope that it will receive the highest rating of merit, by those who will decide on its continued financial support.

Abdel Fattah Abusrour, teacher of philosophy essential for any hope of world peace Posted November 28 '06, 19:12:47
Abdel Fattah Abusrour is the most needed teacher in the Middle East today. The skills he imparts at the Al Rowwad Cultural and Theater Center in Aida Camp, Bethlehem, Palestine, teaches youth to deflect aggressive impulses (even if justified) through drama, dance, music, art, languages, film, computer skills, and academic tutoring. His brilliant commitment to this philosophy is evident in his tours with the youth. The play performances stun, and the youth are outstanding.

I helped to organize the Al Rowwad tour in the summer of 2005 to New York City; Canaan, Connecticut; Burlington, Vermont; and Lexington, Kentucky.

The troupe of 15 stayed for four nights in my youth hostel in Burlington, Vermont. Both children and adults were hard-working, appreciative, outstanding in courtesy and flexibility, and were a joy to have in my life for four short days. In every way, the youth were a tremendous credit to Abed's teachings. We are hoping for a return visit in the summer of 2007.

In addition to his work at Al Rowwad, Abed works tirelessly to get university scholarships for these young people. The only sadness is that there is only one Abed. His skills and commitment are so much needed in other refugee camps in Palestine, or in other suffering communities world-wide.

Art is Empowering Posted November 29 '06, 9:50:09
I attended a performance by AlRowwad theater group in Hartford, CT last year. It was a beautiful, sophisticated show, and the dedication of the children and their teachers was very evident. I was so proud of them, and I felt so uplifted knowing that these kids are learning important lessons and at the same time having fun with their art. And I know that those lessons and their self-development are having a positive chain effect on their families and communities. This is a project that brings more love, beauty, and humanity to the Occupied Territories-- it is an essential supplement to the international diplomacy that has not yet been entirely successful on its own. Art in all of its forms is a powerful, magical force, and it is really essential to child and human development-- it is the perfect balm for personal and societal healing and conflict resolution.

    Modelin nonviolence Posted December 17 '06, 13:02:43
A deep understanding of the power of nonviolence is reflected in the life and work of Abdelfattah Abu Srour. In his tireless devotion to the children of Aida Camp in Bethlehem, a refugee camp where he grew up, Abu Srour and his team of volunteers have created a safe place for children to develop their artisitc talents and survive the brutality of life under Israeli occupation. Turning to the art in their collective life experience has helped these children express and transcend the violence and deprivation of their daily lives. In turn, the children of Al Rowwad have shown the world, 'there is no way to peace, peace is the way'. Abu Srour is one of the living treasures of occupied Palestine. Louisville, Kentucky is honored to have hosted the children of Al Rowwad in July 2005.

Al Rowwad teaches hope and posibility for us all Posted December 17 '06, 13:52:50
Al Rowwad came to our community here in Kentucky and the exchange with our youth was amazing. To see these young people who have been through so much horror, and yet they are able to have such open hearts, this is truly a miracle and obviously largly a result of having such a beautiful focus in their work, the theater they create which affirms their lives and teaches others. What an incredible example of non violent resistance and such a powerful way to honor their history.

Beautiful Resistance helps connect youths in challenges of violence Posted December 19 '06, 15:12:48
The Alrowwad youth visited Louisville, Kentucky during a five city tour in the US. Here they colaborated in art, puppet, and theatre projects with African American youth in neighborhoods struggling to find nonviolent outlets through arts and culture in challenging urban conditions of racism, high crime rates, and economic oppression. There were connections made about the experience of Occupation and keeping hope through creating beauty in the midst of hardship. The youth learned a lot from oneanother, and the exchange brake down the distance between Palestine and Louisville people working for justice and peace.
