Main principle addressed: Build non-violent paths to rights, access & assets
5) Description of initiative: The Project is a strategy to solve conflicts within the community. It is base on the notion of justices of peace that work in the community. The service for conflict resolution is free, fast and has tangible impact. It is alternative was of resolving conflict.
6) Description of innovation: The strategy is innovative because it is fast, reaches everybody and is free. People do not need a laywer. The service also changes people attitudes towards their community.
7) Delivery model: The service is delivered through conciliation meetings where community leaders serve as justices of peace.
Escuela Lara Bonilla. There role is to train us and provide us with technical assistance.
9) Financial model: We do not have a financial model. The work of the Peace Juastice is our mechanism. Our work is for those communities that need mediation services. We are recognized by that.
• Costs as percentage of income: 50%
• Financing: We do not generate any income. We do fundraising within our communities and that income represents 50% of our budget. We are also funded by the IDB and other international and private organizations.
10) Effectiveness
• Project outcomes: We are now everywhere in Colombia, reaching out a
population of 1,900,000 million people.
• Number of clients in past year: The program has benefited 8,500 people last year. Most of
them from Cali, Colombia
11) Scaling up strategy
• Stage of the initiative: Start Up stage.
• Expansion plan: Our plan is to continue our work in providing a free service for conflict resolution. We would like to market the strategy and methodology and strengthen the organization. We are also looking forward to have sustainability strategy for the long-term.
12) Origin of the initiative: Our Constitution from 1991 in its 247 article entrench the
notion that communities are entitle to create and support
Justices of Peace. Bill 497 passed in 1999 provided the
regulatory framework for the legal figure of Justices of
Peace. In 2000 Judge John Mario Rodriguez from Cali gave
the first step and started granting communities the power
to solve conflicts using the legal figure of Justice of
Peace.
