BESO sends experienced professional volunteers, often retired people, on short advisory assignments to more than 100 developing countries around the world. Established in 1973, BESO encourages sustainable economic and social development by assisting government, local non-governmental organizations and companies who are unable to afford the commercial rates of international consultants. BESO's priorities include projects that stimulate economies, facilitate healthcare, and improve living and working environments. BESO volunteers provide managerial, technical, professional skills and training. BESO sees self-help as key to the success of long-term sustainable development and subsequently regards "skills transfer" as a fundamental component of their work. If a requesting organization's application is successful, BESO selects a qualified volunteer from its 3000 person database. BESO provides volunteers' travel costs. Host organizations must provide local transport, accommodation and expenses.
