Paper Houses-shredded paper and/or tires, grasses, straws, wood chips in resin or crete.

Country: United States

Organization: GIVE A HOUSE TO SAVE A HOUSE INC non-profit

2) Focus of activity: Housing Rights

3) Start Year: 1995

4) Positioning in the mosaic of solutions:

  •      Main barrier addressed: Low individual purchasing power
  •      Main principle addressed: Radically lower the cost of the entire housing delivery process

    5) Description of housing product/service offering: The houses will use waste paper of all kinds, even straw and other similar raw materials, tires etc which should make the cost relatively low, and of which there is a staggering amount of paper and tires etc going into landfills each day that could be diverted to building material. (save landfill space)

    6) Description of innovation: The innovative use of waste paper to shred and mix with resin, or some of the forms of CRETE, to place into molds of house wall and roof panels and then to put together as a house, which makes very strong walls for a house. The paper etc will be cheap to acquire and then must be shredded by machine - the paper is abundant in every location of the civilized world. Other natural products may be used to enhance the cost or quality, such as straws or wood chips, tires -etc.

    7) Benefits to clients: Use the casting methods developed by the 'concrete block' industry to produce the building blocks/panels. Purchase land and build a paper house on it and then sell to the low income folks as any sale would be done.

    8) Key operational partnerships: The originators of this building method lives in Texas and would be glad to see their efforts succeed.

    9) Financial model: Seed funding to get started.

              • Costs as percentage of income: ??

              • Financing: no financing yet

    10) Effectiveness

              • Project outcomes: Not started yet. Do not know effectiveness. Although this one house and other structures can be seen up close here in Texas

              • Number of clients in past year: none

              • Percentage of clients that are poor or marginalized: ??

              • Potential demand: 50 million people

    11) Scaling up strategy

              • Stage of the initiative: Start Up stage.

              • Expansion plan: To build thousands of houses as fast as the scrap paper is generated by communities.

    12) Origin of the initiative: Two innovators in Texas has built several objects and several houses by this method.
