No more blood shortage globally
Country: India
Organization: Nahak Overseas Ltd.
2) Sector of activity: Healthcare
3) Description of your products or services: We provide services in the area of eliminating blood shortage globally. Our solution is unique in the sense that presently there is no system to address to this vital issue concerning human lives. Since blood is the very basic health requirement and is in short supply globally, our services assume global importance. We have introduced ICT { Information and Communication Technology } application that is Networking of blood banks, and blood assurance scheme. The details of the service module are given in the operational column. The innovative characterization of the operational model: Networking of blood banks – All the interested blood banks within the state are made members of the network. They are required to report their daily stock position to the control room. The control room provides this information to all those seeking blood. This helps in bridging the gap between supply and demand of blood. ICT and networking play a major role in linking the patients/Hospitals, who need blood with the blood banks. In case of emergency, those in need of blood need not go hunting for blood from pillar to post. The information is made available to them at one point on a Web Portal. This saves them from the tremendous mental and physical torture, which otherwise they have to go through. A team of dedicated persons continuously works at control room to co-ordinate the information about blood demand and supply is available free. It is indeed revolutionery.
4) Description of the operational model: Those in need of blood, receive immediate assistance about the nearest point of availability of blood. This also eliminates the need for frequent public appeal for blood donations. In the process the demand and supply gap is also met. Blood assurance scheme – The scheme is designed considering the present pattern of supply and demand of blood, which is more of an exploitation, and runs more on the lines of barter system – blood for blood - Instead, we have devised a scheme where if a person donates blood once in a year, he is entitled to multiple benefits like – (i) Receiving two units of blood during the entire year, in exchange of one unit that he donated. (ii) The blood is made available to him free of cost, without any charges for testing. (iii) The donor need not give blood for exchange of blood. (iv) The blood donor’s family of four persons is entitled to this benefit. {v} They can get blood from any of the networked blood bank within the state. Our module is highly innovative and out of the box. If implemented in the right manner, the needy can get the life saving blood free of cost, at a crucial juncture in their life. In a way our blood assurance module resembles to an extent, with the manner in which insurance companies go about doing their business. In the process member of the blood assurance scheme gets the benefit. It is a stand- alone module, which is feasible, sustainable and profitable. There is no need for frantic search for blood.
5) Description of the financial model: Revenue Model We take case of one Province 1 Population 6,00,00,000 2 Blood bags required 9,00,000 per annum 3 Target To cater 60% requirement through network bank as per demand i. e. 5,40,000 bags. Avg. price INR 400 Testing cost / mobilization INR 300 (*) Contribution INR 100 per bag divided as a INR 80/bag as blood bank share b INR 20/bag as profit share to missameal NGO for Networking and Blood Assurance Scheme INR 5,40,000 x INR 20 = INR 1,08,00,000* Our scheme generated excess blood which is sold to non networked blood banks as there is shortage in the market. missameal NGO charges INR 20 for scheme and shares 50% contribution so INR 100 - INR 20 = INR 80 50% of INR 80 = INR 40 So missameal NGO gets INR 40 + INR 20 = INR 60 extra as profit. Based on experience 30% blood was generated extra. 30% of INR 5,40,000 = INR 1,62,000 So, INR 1,62,000 x INR 60 = INR 97,20,000 ** Revenue for missameal NGO per annum From * INR 1,08,00,000 From **INR 97,20,000 Total Revenue INR INR 2,05,20,000 - Operation cost INR 30,00,000 -cap. inv. INR 3,00,000 Net yearly earnings INR 1,72,20,000 projections India INR 3,50,00,00

6) Key operational partnership: The project launch and execution part is with our NGO i.e. missameal whose web site is www.missameal.org The operational partnerships are Red Cross, Telecom Company i. e. Tata Telecom. It basically calls for innovative thinking. ICT has converted a major global human health problem in big opportunity which has generated following advantages: 1. Solved human health problem by addressing blood shortage. 2. Generated opportunities and employment. 3. Healped indirectly the economy and GDP of the nation. We are in the process of seeking support from various global organizations across the world to implement this model. Our model is self sustaining, stand alone, economically viable, technically feasible, with no investment or least investment. The model gives part solution to HIV problem as HIV spreads due to spurious blood. We are ready to work with any organization in any country to implement this model for which our services wil be available free.
7) Current outreach:
We are at the Scaling Up stage. The pilot testing of the module is launched in three of the states. It is still at a preliminary stage. But the potential and benefits are huge. It can not be quantified. Mainly because blood is ultimately life itself, however, the estimated demand can be put into billions and billions of dollars. Our pilot scale operation has generated very good results and first in the history of blood banking one province of India had excess blood supply. Our scale up operation is more systematically organised as we have taken a multi stake holder approach involving Red Cross and Telecom company.
How many clients have benefited from your product/service in total? Over the last year? The project is at a start up stage and we can only say that in pilot trials few thousand people have been benefited.
What percentage of your clients is below the poverty line ($2 per day)? 40% around 40%
What is the order of magnitude of the potential demand for your products or services? Which
other low-income groups, countries or regions could benefit from it? Try to quantify (number
of clients, market size in currency): Our application of this project has world wide demand and we have presented our scheme at various international platform - like {1} UN Planery Session, World Bank, International Society for Blood Tranfusion - Annual Meet, Global Management Institutes, etc. etc. we are in dialogue with few countries. This is a unique model, which can give poor countries a partial solution on HIV and other problems at virtually least investment. However, poor who become member of the scheme, get total free service and blood at zero cost. Blood banking is still in the hands of private sector. The concerned government authorities are not quite aware of the intricacies involved in this segment. India experiences a blood deficit of 20% to 50%. Two of the provinces had to declare a state of emergency due to the acute shortage of blood. Continued
8) Scale-up strategy:
How many low-income individuals do you plan to benefit in three years from now? How are you planning to scale up or replicate your solution? What are the major constraints to scale up?
One of the states had to make it mandatory for their police force to donate blood. Moreover, spurious blood supply and exploitation of the needy by way of demanding blood for blood, is a common scenario. India and other low-income countries can benefit tremendously from this module. What is needed is the right kind of platform in the respective countries and an appropriate infrastructure, to further strengthen this innovative module. The like minded NGOs { Non Government Organizations } who are committed to this kind of noble cause, enterprising corporate houses, and prominent religious sects, can play a major role in implementing this module on a large canvass. We are looking for NGO support and very low investment.
Which specific areas - and why - in your field would benefit most from investment by corporations, foundations, and other investors:
We have developed economically viable and technically feasible project which is profitable using insurance model partially. Corporations can make money by giving free services to poor people. This is a self sustainable, social revolutionery project. We have presented our papers on this module, to the office bearers during the world convocation of ISBT { International Society on Blood Transfusion } at Paris, which was widely acclaimed. 9) The organization: How does the initiative fit with your overall organization's strategic goals and priorities? How did the initiative start?
We have started an NGO with this i. e. address the blood shortage globally as our goal. One of the trustee / Director studied the problem for six months, made pilot trials and made the module economically sound and self sustaining. We are now launching in three major province of India having population worth about 120 millions, having 40% people living below poverty line. We have already got some global recognition about this activity from various bodies. We received an award from CIIE { Center for Innovation, Incubation and Enterpreneurship } at IIM { Indian Institute of Management } Ahmedabad, which is ranked amongst the topmost management institutes of Asia. Our module was awarded. We have made presentations of this module to the concerned officials of UN { United Nations } at Geneva, during the world summit, which was widely appreciated by all the participants.
