Education as a weapon of Social Change and Development

Country: Nigeria

Organization: Bolarinwa Joshua Olusegun (Individual)

Idea: Education is basically the process by which new skills, ideas, innovations and knowledge are acquired .It is also the background to or the engine of development and weapon of empowerment for people in a given society. Thus, education gives insight to ethics and values and by so doing it teaches morals i.e. what you ought to do and not what you think you should do.

How do you do it: People need to be sensitized. They must be informed and we must create awareness among the parents and the youth especially must be the target audience. Infact, the government itself must be geared up and wake up to her responsibility to do what is right (create ethical values worthy of emulation). At least, if all this is done morality and values would prevail in the society.

Innovation: This idea will serve as a weapon of social change and development. There would be an ethic-driven society and this will also make the parents, the children (youth) and the government to wake up (consciousness) to their responsibilities that will guarantee good manner and morality in the society.

Impact: This idea will change the manner and behavior of the people in the society when young people and adults participate in the teaching of morals, ethics and courage to live a life that will seek to transform or change situations and themselves. When people engage in education it reforms them and put a ?good thinking? in them. Youth are the future leaders; their education, awareness, consciousness and persistence for empowerment indicate their desire for a changed society.

Ethical Action: Education as a weapon of empowerment will enhance positive contribution to a morally justified (ethical) society. Infact, education refines people?s behavior and enables good reasoning that will lead to the desired change in our society.

Replication: This idea is replicable at every level in the society both at the local, state and national even at the regional level. Efforts have also begun at the regional, sub- regional (AU and ECOWAS) and the national levels on the need to improve enlightenment and encourage the youth to embrace education that will lead to change.

Sustainability: I believe that this project could last long in as much as every stakeholder could be committed to it. Cooperation is also guaranteed, since the aim is to build an ethical, moral and just society the private sector, government, religious organizations and even parents would be motivated and convinced to make it work.

Position in the Ethics Mosaic of Solutions:
Factor: Fatalism
Principle: Developing self-awareness and interconnectedness
