Benefactor of the year

Country: Bulgaria

Organization: Benefactor foundation

Idea: The idea of our organization and the concrete initiative is to organize and manage yearly contest called Benefactor of the year. Its main goal is to introduce to the public attention in thep public space the new "heroes" and create contemporary images and idols in the youngsters. Up to date there are no real live examples of the good - thinking, behaviour, acting and feeling. The idea of bene-factoring and volunteerism is presented in a new and attractive way in order to win the hearts of the young people, build self- estimation and provoke them to participate actively.

How do you do it: We organize a nationalwide contest. The first step is the nomination campaign. We encourage the grateful people to nominate their benefactors through a nomination form and to point proves for the good act they receive. Then we choose a Nomination committee for the evaluation of the forms. It includes 7 people, all experts from - media, NGO, company representatives, EU representative, Rotary club and communal centers. Then we have voting for the price of he public through pulbishing all nominations received. The Awarding ceremony is almost the last step - a celebration with a symbolic award and Thankfulness notice. And publishing the "Guide - Benefactor of 2004/5/6 year" with all nominations and proves.

Innovation: We have decided to develop this contemporary form in order to attract the attention of the youngsters by giving publicity and appreciation of the Good as well as the Bad.We have 4 categories according to the benefactors - individual, NGO, company, communal center. We lso have - the Big award and the award of the public. This real heroes walk alog with us, their example can be followed. And on the other hand they make the difference and the society says "Thank you".We do not allow self-nomination - only the grateful people and media-witnessing the actions may nominate.

Impact: We have avolunteer groups - Interact school clubs to assist with the gathering ot he nominations around the country. They are directly involved. We collaborate with 3 main nationalwide represented organizations - Bulgarian Union of municipalities; BUlgarian association of the communal centers; NGO networks and branch organizations. We also use the channels of printed and electronic media as well as Internet. We have till now more than 50 young volunteers and Rotary club network involved in our project.

Ethical Action: Some of our benefactors did not want publicity for the good they make. It was very hard because the natinal television wanted to make short portraits and show their good example in the subtitle: The Good news. I tried to convince them but they were insisting on their own. FInally we made the presentation under the call: The Good with no face ;)

Replication: It is an annual contest on a national level.

Sustainability: We already started: Charity bazar - 4 times per year in a various format in order to keep the public focused on the issue; Production line of small chcolates for accompanying the coffee - with small sayings: "The Benefactor says:..." that we sell to hotels and cafe shops in order to fund ourselves and disseminate the messages of the Benefactor idea.

Position in the Ethics Mosaic of Solutions:
Factor: Fatalism
Principle: Developing self-awareness and interconnectedness
