Country: India
Organization: Naveen Gram Agrotechnologies Pvt. Ltd.
Idea: Identify innovative products available with grassroots individuals or small companies and market them by branding, creating awareness and demonstrations.
How do you do it: 1. Identify an innovative product 2. Negotiate and enter into an agreement with the manufacturer 3. Decide on a brand and register the brand 4. Print promotion materials 5. Identify geographical areas addressed by the innovation 6. Exhibition of innovation in these areas. 7. Generate leads to demonstrate the product 8. Demonstration in the area 9. Appointment of local agent/dealer 10. Sale through agents
Innovation: We only market and not manufacture products making it possible for us to multiply the products offered through our distribution network. Since we work with small enterprises, we support many small enterprises manufacturing these products. We help share information, best practices among our partner organisations helping them become competitive.
Impact: My activity will encourage more and more small enterprises to tie-up with organisation like ours. More and more youth will be encouraged to take risk and develop innovative products, if they know there exists a company that can market their product. Most of the products develop will cater to a very regional need and may not be feasible for mass production, discouraging large companies to enter the market.
Ethical Action: We work with a fabricator, whose threhser is better than those offered by large companies. We have started demonstrating the product outside his area of operation. The brand has been decided, promotion material printed and enquieires generated. We have started working with the innovator ( who is a school drop out) to reduce his cost and make his production more systematic to increase labour productivity. We are ready for the season starting November up to March, have made plans and set targets for turnover. We have approached individuals and Venture Capitalists to fund his work-in-progress.
Replication: Yes, our activity can be replicated easily. Since, we work only with small enterprises, it will restrict the number of enterprises one company like ours can work with. However, it is a profitable business and our business model can be replicated across all countries and States wiothin India. Also,it will encourage local talent and formally educated talent to come together for servicing the local industry from local resources.
Sustainability: We have a mark-up on the products purchased from the innovator/producer. This mark-up helps recover our expenses and also leave little profit for more expansion. The surplus can be used to fund prototypes or innovators working towards creating solutions for local needs.
