Child Positive Mood Initiative (CPMI)

Country: India

Organization: YOGA HEALTH CLINIC

Idea: All of us know too well that when we are in a positive mood we judge everything as positive and react positively and viceversa. Something that we usually donot realise is that our mood could be 'contagious'. The behavior that we exhibit while in a particular mood effects people around us, especially those who are younger to us or lower in status...most importantly the 'Children'. What right do we have to so alter the child's state of natural happiness? I feel that parents and teachers need to be taught mood sensitive behavior to become conscious of their mood relevant behaviors and recognize the rights of the child to live a stress less humane childhood. Then parents and teachers could be the facilitators of positive growth of children.

How do you do it: A large number of parents and teachers will be selected based on reports of frequent negative mood and negative mood behaviors by screening them on a specially prepared Mood questionnaire. Then they will be trained in Mood management and sensitivity to children's mood through such techniques as yoga, stress management and role-playing. They will be taught specific techniques that first help them assess when they enter into a negative state of mood and effortfully to change the mood into 'neutral' and then to 'positive' one. They will also be exposed to how their children feel when they are in a negative mood in child-adult workshops.

Innovation: This is an innovative research strategy that has wide implications globally. Psychologists have so far conducted innumerable studies on how mood effects behavior. But so far only few studies focused on efforts at changing the mood willfully and intentionally so that the repercurssions of these negative behaviors are minimized. This idea when tested out will result in an Implementation Package that can be used by anyone in this world to help then in their Mood Assessment and Control. The innovative answer is simply this: WHEN WE KNOW THAT WE ARE AT OUR BEST BEHAVIORALLY, MORALLY AND NEURALLY WHEN IN A POSITIVE MOOD LET'S BE IN IT MOST OF THE TIME.

Impact: Firstly, it aids people to learn that thier mood has impact on other's mood mostly importantly on children who mostly are the silent sufferers. The package which is globally relevant and which can be easily learnt helps them be a better individual; happier, self fulfilling and make other happy.

Ethical Action: Being a psychologist I have done extensive study on mood and behavior. And being a psychologist, just as I observe others behavior I automatically learnt to observe my own! It is then that I observed how my negative mood makes me behave, especially at home with children and then I shockingly realized how shameful it is. I believe this is the experience of all parents and teachers which becomes evident when they start feeling bad about thier behavior with their wards especially when the child has gone sleep! Its then I searched for change. I am changing and have changed to a large extent. Why not share my secrets by testing then scientifically with the whole world? DEEP DOWN THE HEART THERE ARE NO BOUNDARIES. ALL OF US ARE HUMAN BEINGS!

Replication: The activity can be easily replicated since I am ready to disseminate the research findings as widely as possible. The technqiues of yoga has become global today and can be easily learned and followed.

Sustainability: It will be self-sustainable since people have been wanting a remedy for so long? It will be sustainable since people will start finding the change in themselves and others and start seeing the positive glow in thier children!
