Country: Ghana
Organization: Conservation Foundation (CF)
Idea: The young gradually begin to understand and accept the challenges in life and do prepare to undertake activities to enhance their personal and community development when values like compassion, volunteerism, patriotism, entrepreneurship, the attitude of positive thinking among others are imparted to them.
How do you do it: Has facilitated the formation of a youth group. Will take them through series of seminars, talks, workshops to sensitize, build their capacity and prepare them for challenges in life. Develop the interests and capabilities of these young ones through capacity building training acquired Invite parents of these young ones, interact with them and explain interests and capabilities seen in their children and their role in assisting them to develop those interests Organize programs for them to meet people of same interests and aspirations as they have Prepare them to reach out to show the skills acquired by organizing seminars and delivering speeches, talks, planning workshops on their own in schools, communities and other planned activities
Innovation: The adults (parents) will for once accept the role their young ones are playing in helping the society in which they live especially their peers, the vulnerable, the elderly and the poor to realize that lifeŭs battle is won by those who feel they can and strive to succeed. The rippling effects of their positive attitudes can cause a change in their communities among their peers, the poor and those who hitherto felt there is no hope for them to meet the challenges in life. there will be programs to meet with successful enterpreneurs who they will select as their role models to learn from.
Impact: Parents increase their understanding about the interests and aspirations of their children without imposing anything on them while the young shares their interests with their communities and also assisting interested parties in likewise manner to identify their interests and capabilities and building upon it. There are occasional recreational activities in which parents and other adults will be invited to take part. It is all aimed at exposing and fostering a good relationship between the young and their adults to the challenges in life which awaits especially the young.
Ethical Action: It is interesting to note that most often only few of the young ones who are found in remote or rural areas or are born to poor parents or do not have parents at all think they can make any headway in life through education. Majority of them only pray to complete their basic education. Those who get the chance even to enter the secondary see themselves as more fortunate but even without a future since all they end up doing may not be as a result of the secondary school they attended. With this innovation, the young are or will realize their potentials and the various opportunities available to them to grasp to move from their current position to a livelier one where they can have assess to information and the good things in life. Thus the meeting with their role models will serve a very good purpose in building their hope for the future.
Replication: Other groups will be opened in other parts of the country with the same approach to reach out to the young in those places. There will be occasional general camp meeting where all the groups in the country will gather to share experiences and lessons learned.
Sustainability: The group aside what ever they will receive from the organization also pays weekly dues and has a plan of action to raise funds to support what CF is doing for them. CF is also developing proposals which focuses on the youth and if approved will be implemented by the group. Any other proposal the organization will prepare will take into consideration the existence of this group.
