Bhagnagar, The City of Fortune
One of the worst forms of human trafficking is for the purposes of sexual exploitation. Bhagnagar is a 12-minute documentary film that depicts how in some parts of India, poor and vulnerable Muslim families are deceived into trafficking their young daughters in the name of "mutha marriages" or contract marriages to Arab sheikhs. The sheikhs use these girls for a few days or months and then discard them. The victim is always a minor girl. Bhagnagar was filmed largely in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, and was produced by Prajwala, one of the organizations included in the Human Trafficking: a Mosaic of Solutions. This 17-minute video documentary provides an inside look at Asha Niketan, a transit shelter for more than 40 survivors of human trafficking. It is a Prajwala program for the rehabilitation of the victims of commercial sexual exploitation. These girls were deceived or forced in the name of jobs, marriage, or glamor. When rescued, these girls were emotionally, psychologically, and physically shattered, there self-esteem and self-worth gone. For the healing process to begin, it was important to make them believe that they too are capable, they too have an identity, and more than anything else, dignity can be restored. With a little care and a little support, life is worth living. Asha Niketan has evolved into a holistic approach that combines mental health intervention, vocational skills, livelihood options and a chance to reintegrate into society.
