Country: Romania
Organization: Social Alternatives Association
Innovation: In the chain of trafficking there is one important field: the sex consumers and this is the inovative aspect. Without consumers there wouldn't be an offert. Many of them don't know that these women are forced to prostitute and that are slaves. Many of the victims have been released by clients. First we will realize the psychological profile of the sex consumer. Then we will choose ways to inform them about: consequences of trafficking, how to recognize a victim, how to help on releasing them. We can use movies like "Lilya4ever" fliers, events (concerts) to go on bad neighbourhood, schools, nightclubs, bars, and other places where potential consumers are. Helping a youngster not to become a consumer or a trafficker can prevent hundreds of victims
Impact: When you prevent the rising of a new generation of consumers and traffickers you do make systemic impact. Also, using youngsters to release victims is also a new thing and can be a new method in combating human trafficking. Our organization had developed prevention campaigns on 8 counties from Moldova, the poorest part of Romania and has the capacity to develop systemic impact. We can start first with a bad neighbourhood and using the results we can replicate it to other counties and bring the idea to the interministerial group from the Guvern that deals with preventing and combating human trafficking. So, the idea can be implemented with minimum cost to national level.
Tipping Point: If there is a demand there will be an offert!Very important principle.Because the demand is high andf the traffickers can easily earn great sums of money they will do anything to satisfy the demand. The tipping point is to decrease in a way the demand.Study what raise the demand (pornography etc) and find ways to decrease it.The gap is that few people really believe that the demand can be decreased by education, information and awareness campaigns. Most of the people start the battle against trafficking thinking that we can do nothing to decrease the number of consumers raffikers and the demand for paid sex.The gap is that there is a lack of support because the specialists think that is to idealistic, but this is the real root of the problem.
Replication: Social Alternatives Association has a network of NGO's working on combating trafficking in the region of Moldova. These organizations are developing preventing campaigns. It will be easy to start just another way to prevent human trafficking. We have also conections with other NGO's from Romania that are working in this field. Using the page www.antitrafic.ro and the monthly newsletter ANTITRAFIC we can easily involve theese organizations and governmental institutions in improving the idea and replicate it at a local context.
Sustainability: The idea is sustainable because it does not involve big costs. In a way or other all the 20 NGO's from Romania working in this field are developing preventing campaigns. So they would just have to create specific materials and to change the way to prevent. Every NGO has a number of volunteers involved in this activities so there are human resources. Also the guvernmental institutions have to combat trafficking and if the idea proves to be good they will sustain it. It is cheaper to prevent the becoming of a traffiker then to assist 20 victims or more!
