Psycho-social Rehabilitation of Survivors of Human Trafficking.

Country: India

Organization: Odanadi Seva Samsthe.

Innovation: The philosophy of intervention deviates from traditional counselling and psychiatric intervention models. Instead the focus is on bringing the victims out of their trauma through unconventional means by giving them the human touch- aimed at instilling a sense of self-worth in them. The modus operandi involves tools such as adventure sports, martial arts, yoga and meditation; community involvement including providing them with a joyful living atmosphere and communication with mainstream society; and arts like painting, sculpture, dance music and theatre. The mantra behind my efforts is to provide a sensitive yet joyful atmosphere full of life to enable them to come out and communicate their feelings without any inhibitions voluntarily.

Impact: Setting a global trend in dealing with trafficking victims, my advocacy that effective rehabilition is possible only if the situation is de-criminalised has succeeded. I have shown that rehabilitation of those prostituted is possible and does not revolve only around monetary allurements. At the national level, the model has secured me a place as the Karnataka member of the National Advisory Committee on Human Trafficking and National Study Panel on Child Abuse. At the local level, the model is being propagated through training and sensitization programmes at all levels. I have triggered a re-think of the rehab strategies in many homes run by both Government and NGOs; and succeeded in de- stigmatizing the victims among opinion makers.

Tipping Point: My focus is on the various psycho-social maladies such as depression, phobias, mania, guilty feeling, distrust, addictions, hysteria, obsession, neurosis, psychosis, tension, isolation and withdrawal syndromes. Currently, these are not adequately addressed in the traditional models and hence, the focus on these maladies is the cornerstone of my model. However, the model faces hurdles both within the organisation and outside owing to many still carrying the traditional mindset and refusing to come to terms with their own role as members of the mainstream society in fuelling trafficking. I have hence initiated the process of sensitising the resource persons involved in anti-trafficking measures with emphasis on the psychological goals.

Replication: The efforts toward replication of this model hae commenced at the global and local levels. The efforts include networking with various other agencies involved in the activitiy at the national level; conducting workshops for various peer groups and opinion makers inthe local societies; and participating the presenting papers at various global forums apart from initiating efforts at turning the focus toward the psycho-social aspect of the issue at every given opportunity. Simultaneously direct intervention through advocacy has commenced among those in the government and those running various institutions for trafficking victims. The media has also been galvanized as a apart of the effort by exposing journalists to the mind of the survivor

Street play

Sustainability: The model is inherently self-sustainable as it essentially focuses on various institutions, run both by the Governments and NGOs, to carry forward the message. This, alongside similar initiatives being undertaken by those who matter in the corridors of power and those renowned in various fields of art and culture. Alongside these two initiatives, the trafficked survivors themseles are being imboldened to taken on the role of advocates addressing the issue. Among the younger generation, students of social work and mental health will be sensitized to rehabilitation of traficked survivors. I myself propose to assume the role of a researcher and advisor steering these processes and tailoring the model to emerging challenges.
