Employment, Awareness and Group initiative

Country: India

Innovation: The strategy is to create employment for the people of an area by imparting skill based education. After proper selection of economic activities and groups can be formed and each group be imparted skills that will help them earn a decent living in their native place itself. Along with the skill-imparting classes, educative and awareness classes can also be introduced. Members of group can be encouraged to undertake co-operative banking. They must be explained not to use all the sale proceeds in buying non- income generating things but to buy raw materials and use only profit for buying other things. Thus they can continue earning by repeating the cycle. Thus the people become self-sufficient and can have a decent life style.

Impact: If the model is implemented properly in any place, it can help in reducing unemployment, unawareness and help increase co-operative activities and reduce the motive for people to opt for going to an alien place by falling prey to illusions created by traffickers for the place where they traffic people to. Based on my observations, of 52 NGOs working for Women's Livelihood, it can also make group cohesion so powerful that they jointly select whom to vote for in an area election or make local administration to improve the infrastructure. If all the groups are educated properly, it also helps do away with local community based conflicts. Apart from trafficking it can also help prevention of urban migartion.

Tipping Point: Not applicable. I have developed this model based upon my survey of 52 NGOs that I had visited under Government of Gujarat's Women's Livelihood Restoration Programme which was launched to restore livelihood of women in 5 districts of Gujarat in the aftermath of Earthquake 2001.

In my own capapcity, I would like to explain this model more elaborately to as many NGOs as possible so that they can undertake this model and help poor people get a decent life in their native place itself. I wanted to explain on how the implement the model in detailed way, as to how to start, run and exit the area. May I say the space provided above is little less for elaborating on innovative ideas and models.

Replication: This model can replicated by an NGO and anywhere. It only needs some trainers and cost of raw material apart from usual NGO infrastructure. Once the NGO feels that people can run the activities own their won, it can move to other place and start the programme there all over again.

Sustainability: If the beneficiaries are able to sustain the economic activity from the skills imparted to them, it would be sustainable. If the NGO is able to find market for the products made by beneficiaries, the sustainability would be enhanced further. The NGO can also see what all things, that it consumes, can me made by the beneficiaries. Like instead of paper from market, it can have hand-made paper made by the beneficiaries or files and folders etc. It can also take part in handicraft exhibitions where the beneficiaries can showcase their produce and get more exposure. Thus with little help from the NGO, there is long term sustainability.
